Nicole Kidman reportedly reached a tipping point after her now ex Keith Urban left her during her ‘most distressing’ times when her mother died.

Nicole announced her separation from country star Urban on Tuesday, effectively drawing a line under their once rock-solid 19-year marriage.

It follows a tough year for Nicole and Keith who were thought to be considering a move back to their native Australia last November after the turbulent times.

Nicole suffered a personal tragedy after the death of her beloved mother Janelle last September, which saw her return to Sydney for the funeral.

Amid her grieving, Nicole had a very busy schedule jetting around America promoting her latest movies and filming yet another project.

At the time her loved ones were said to be worried about Nicole suffering from a ‘burnout’ and the then couple were reportedly considering returning to Australia.

‘Nicole and Keith have had their worst year ever, they’ve barely spent any time together and she’s been on her own throughout some of her most distressing times,’ a source told Woman’s Day at the end of last year.

‘The big worry on everyone’s minds is, how much more of this can she take?’

At the time Keith was said to be considering stepping back from touring to support Nicole after his 10-date Las Vegas residency came to end in February this year.

Daily Mail Australia contacted Nicole’s representatives for comment at the time.

Janelle died at the age of 84 – just hours before Nicole was awarded the Best Actress gong for her role in Babygirl at the Venice Film Festival.

Nicole and Keith still own properties Down Under, including a $6.5million farmhouse in the Southern Highlands and two penthouses in Milson’s Point in Sydney, which they lease out.

Kidman filed to end the marriage on Tuesday – citing irreconcilable differences – as a source claimed to the Daily Mail that Urban has already moved on with a younger woman in the music industry.

The well-placed Nashville music business PR source said: ‘The rumor is that he’s with a younger woman in the business. It’s all everyone is talking about. Everyone wants to know who, but so far, that’s a mystery.’

Kidman was previously married to Tom Cruise, 63, for 11 years from 1990 to 2001. They adopted two children together: Isabella, 32, and Connor, 30.

At this time, Urban who is renting his own home in Music City, is allegedly showing no signs of wanting to reconcile.

Those in Kidman’s circle claim the very the suggestion of him with someone else after their separation has been difficult for her to process.

The couple were last seen together publicly in June this year, when they were pictured attending a FIFA World Cup match in Nashville, Tennessee.

The country star has been away for much of the year on his High and Alive World Tour. He is due to perform in Hershey, Pennsylvania on Thursday.

Kidman and the children, meanwhile, have remained in Nashville, where the couple own a $4million compound.

In July, Urban dropped a hint that all was not well between the pair when he dramatically hung up during a phone interview with a radio station after a crude question about Kidman’s raunchy recent scenes, such as in her movies Babygirl and A Family Affair.

For her part, and while promoting her Netflix series The Perfect Couple back in September last year, Kidman admitted there was no such thing as a ‘perfect’ marriage.

‘There’s no perfect anything,’ she said, ‘anything that’s presented as perfect… forget it.’

Earlier that year, Kidman said she was ‘so lucky’ to have met the singer.

‘I’m so lucky that I have Keith who’s just my love, my deep, deep love,’ she told People magazine.

‘I’m so lucky that I have Keith… that gives me the ability to go and do whatever I have to do because I know where I can come back,’ she added.

The pair married in 2006 during a traditional Catholic ceremony at the Cardinal Cerretti Chapel in Kidman’s hometown of Sydney.

She welcomed Sunday Rose in July 2008 and Faith via surrogate two years later.

In 2022, Urban insisted that he and his wife are ‘as normal as you get’ on an episode of Jessica Rowe’s podcast series The Big Talk Show.

He also spoke about the very first time they met at the G’Day LA event in 2005, saying he thought the stunning Hollywood star was ‘well out of his league.’

‘We’re just a couple who work things out, go through things together, life, and support each other the best way we can and try and raise our family,’ Urban explained.

‘Underneath it all, we’re as normal as you can get I reckon,’ he claimed, before reflecting he was ‘not in a great place’ when they first met.

‘[She] seemed well out of my league at that time in my life,’ he said.

‘I was not in a great place at my life, struggling with a lot of things, not in a million years would someone like that see anything in me… The fact that became what it is meant to be is astounding.’

He also described his wife as ‘ethereal, angelic, other worldly, very mystical and then completely down to earth at the same time and very funny.’

Last year, Urban reflected on how he nearly destroyed his marriage, not long after they walked down the aisle.

‘We got married in 2006, and barely four months into our marriage, the addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens,’ he said while presenting at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute to Kidman last year.

Urban revealed that he was struggling with addiction when he first met Nicole and with her support he managed to eventually pull through.

‘Four months into a marriage, and I’m in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us.

‘Nic pushed through every negative voice – I’m sure even some of her own – and she chose love. And here we are tonight 18 years later.

‘Her capacity to love is like no one I’ve ever met.’

The former couple share daughters Sunday Rose, and Faith Margaret, 14.
