TVA Sports journalist Anthony Martineau is on site for this potentially historic game between the Capitals and the Islanders.

If Alex Ovechkin beats goaltender Ilya Sorokin and scores a goal, he will become the all-time leading goal scorer in National Hockey League history and will officially break Wayne Gretzky’s record.

According to what Martineau just reported exclusively, everything is already prepared and a plan is in place if he scores today.

A plan in place if Alex Ovechkin scores and breaks the record today

Check out his post:

“I’m told that if Alex Ovechkin breaks the record, the game will be immediately stopped and a ceremony lasting about ten minutes will take place.”

It would be a ceremony lasting about ten minutes.

According to a New York journalist as well, two special guests would come onto the ice: Gretzky himself, and also NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

We should obviously note that Ovechkin currently has 894 goals in 1,486 career NHL games, while Gretzky scored 894 goals in 1,487 career games in the NHL.

These are absolutely phenomenal numbers.

A must-watch game between the New York Islanders and Alex Ovechkin’s Capitals

Ovechkin’s Capitals face off today against the New York Islanders, live from Long Island, starting at 12:30 PM!

You don’t want to miss this.

Let’s remember the scene that led to today:

Today could truly be a historic day for the National Hockey League, for the Washington Capitals organization, for modern hockey, and of course for the greatest goal scorer of his generation, the great number 8.

We will absolutely be keeping a close eye on this.

P.S. The ceremony in question will be held the moment he scores his next goal, whether it’s today or in a future game.
