It was supposed to be just another night of hockey, but for Patrik Laine, the spotlight found him in the most unexpected—and controversial—way.

The Montreal Canadiens’ newest lightning rod has once again become the center of heated discussion, and this time, it’s not just about his scoring touch. In a season already packed with high expectations and relentless scrutiny, Laine’s actions on the ice have sparked a wave of debate that’s rippling through the locker room, the fanbase, and even the coaching staff.

What happened during that first period against the Maple Leafs? Why did a seemingly routine play suddenly become the talk of the hockey world? The answer isn’t as simple as a penalty call or a missed opportunity.

Instead, it’s a story that’s unfolding in real time—a narrative of effort, discipline, and the pressure to perform under the watchful eyes of Martin St-Louis and Kent Hughes. And if you think you’ve seen it all from Patrik Laine, think again.

The fallout from this moment could shape not only his season, but also his future with the Canadiens. Curious about what really went down, and how Laine responded when the cameras zoomed in? Read on to uncover the full story.

The always very polarizing Patrik Laine didn’t take long before finding himself at the center of a controversial sequence in this 2025-26 season with the Canadiens.

Laine, who needs to show a higher level of effort at 5-on-5, has already made a move that represents exactly what Martin St-Louis does NOT want to see.

Already a controversial scene involving Patrik Laine

Instead of taking 2-3 more strides, instead of working a little harder, Laine made the (very bad) decision to hook a Maple Leafs player right in the middle of the first period.

“Patrik Laine, who takes a hook 200 feet from his goal.

Two more skate strokes and that would have been it.”

“Habs coach Marty St. Louis is gonna hate that Patrik Laine penalty in the offensive zone” – HabsOnReddit

Fortunately, this very bad penalty ultimately had no consequences for Martin St-Louis’ squad, thanks to Oliver Kapanen!

Check out Laine’s reaction on the penalty bench after Kapanen’s goal.. Let’s just say his reaction says it all!

What a goal!

Back to Laine – I’m really curious to see how he responds after that disappointing play in the first period, because I am 100% certain Martin St-Louis will be having a word with him.

That’s precisely why Laine had been summoned by Kent Hughes for a meeting.

He needs to get the message and give more at even strength.

He’s more than capable of it!
