As Marner faces intense backlash for abruptly canceling his annual charity event, speculation about his next move is reaching a fever pitch. With free agency looming on July 1st and rumors swirling about potential destinations, fans and analysts alike are bracing for the end of an era in Toronto.

The decision to call off his charity event, citing uncertainty about his summer plans, has only fueled the belief that Marner’s days with the Maple Leafs are numbered. As the hockey world awaits his next move, the spotlight shines brighter than ever on one of the league’s most talented—and now most talked-about—stars.

Mitch Marner is facing severe backlash after canceling a charity event that all but confirms his fate with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Set to become a free agent on July 1st,
Mitch Marner is expected to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs, who drafted him 4th overall in 2015.

Last weekend, insider Elliotte Friedman made a massive declaration about Marner’s future:

Marner’s camp is not engaged with them. And I think everybody knows the way this is going to be heading – that on July 1, he’s gonna go out there, he’s gonna hit the market, he’s gonna pick a team, he’s gonna set a contract, and he’s not coming back to Toronto.

In a new development from Marner’s camp, it truly appears as though his time in Toronto will end in a few weeks.

Indeed, Marner announced that he canceled his yearly charity event in Toronto due to the “uncertainty surrounding his summer schedule”:

“After thoughtful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event, scheduled for July 10th and 11th. The uncertainty around Mitch’s summer schedule makes it challenging to plan responsibly. Out of respect for the time and commitment of our partners and supporters, we feel it’s best to make this decision now.

While we are disappointed not to come together this year, the Foundation will continue to honour all its commitments to charitable partners.”

Canceling this year’s event shows that Marner isn’t likely to return to Toronto, he could bring that event to his next team, but he now faces backlash for his decision.

Marner’s next destination has been widely speculated over the past weeks, with the Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Las Vegas Golden Knights, Anaheim Ducks, and Chicago Blackhawks apparently leading the race.
