When Patrick stumbled across an ad for casting of Australia’s first season of The Floor, the $200,000 cash prize was just a pipe dream.
After a hard fought final, he officially beat 80 other clever contestants to make it a reality.
Patrick dueled MasterChef alum Amina Elshafei for the title in a best of three. First, he won in his inherited category of ‘history makers’ before Amina levelled him in her’s, ‘vegetables’.
With the most space on The Floor in his control, the 33-year-old had the advantage of choosing the third tie-breaker category. He selected world leaders, which he correctly predicted would have overlap with what he had spent a lot of time studying.
Despite the surreal situation, in an interview with 9Entertainment Patrick said he was “operating on autopilot”.
“I don’t think I felt nervous, because I don’t think I had much control over the situation. When you’re up there, the money doesn’t feel real. All that I did feel was the people watching in the room, and I just knew that I would be okay at the topic,” he said.

After a comprehensive final victory, the newly crowned winner was in shock – leading to a hilarious moment he said will haunt him for a while.
“When I walked back down the The Floor with Rodger, I kneel down and kiss The Floor. I’m very embarrassed about that now, but whatever, I will just have to wear that as part of the prize,” he joked.

“But when I was able to think about it with a bit more clarity I was so happy that I’ve made my family watching back home proud,” he continued.
“And also, the people who were still there in the room chanting my name – it was a great feeling and probably something I’ll never experience again. So yeah, it was just shock and happiness and pride.”

Although now in possession of a lot more money, Patrick said he planned to slip back into life as normal.
“I’m going to try and invest the money and I’m not going to change my lifestyle,” he revealed.
“Hopefully it will help me get a property sometime because I don’t have any assets at the moment. It’s a boost to bring me in line with what other people already have if they got on the property ladder years ago. That’s how I’m seeing it. It just helps me be less worried about the future.”
But it wasn’t only the money that had Patrick feelings like a winner.

“I feel really lucky from begin to end, and most importantly, the bonding experience with the other 80 contestants has stayed with me,” he explained.
“We’re still friends, we’re still in touch every day, and especially now, we’ve been watching the show that we made. So I’ve got a lot of new friends from the experience, and that’s really the biggest win that I’ve had, apart from also making my family and friends proud of me back home.”
