It’s typically one of the most positive reality shows on Australian TV as celebrities take to the dance floor and show off their newfound skills, but Sunday night’s episode of Dancing With The Stars saw a tense exchange between a contestant and a judge. Osher Günsberg, who previously told Yahoo Lifestyle he would likely get the ‘villain edit’ this season, went head to head with resident ‘mean judge’ Craig Revel Horwood after he critiqued his tango to David Bowie’s ‘Fashion’.

Craig labelled the routine a “right royal mess” and criticised the way he “fumbled” down the ramp at the beginning of the “erratic” performance. While contestants usually stay silent during the critiques, Osher cut Craig off and said he was “more than welcome” to try the move himself and show him how to do it.

“But I need you to be doing it in a tango step while the person next to you is on one foot, kicking, and you’re holding their momentum against you. After you,” Osher added, to which Craig replied, “Well, we’ll do that at some other stage, darling”.

The sparring between the two men continued before host Sonia Kruger, who had been standing sheepishly next to Osher as he challenged Craig, jumped in and said, “Is this the point where we bring the lions into the Colosseum?”.

After the judges awarded their scores, including two points from Craig, Osher simply laughed and said he couldn’t change what their “ping pong bats” said.

“They’re judging paddles, Osher,” Dr Chris Brown told him, with Osher saying, “I’m sorry I didn’t apply the correct reverence to the scoring system”.

Sonia then warned Osher that he may be “held in contempt” if he wasn’t careful with his language, to which he replied, “If it pleases the court, the contempt came from the judging panel first”.

“Only the truth came from the judging panel, darling,” Craig responded, while Sonia remarked, “This is the funnest episode I’ve ever been a part of on Dancing With The Stars”.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle following his elimination, Osher says he was thrilled to have been able to give Craig a moment to “do the thing that he’s there to do” as the show’s “baddie judge”.

“But at the same time, I worked my a** off and I tried really hard. I was never going to be a technically perfect person at it, but it was like, come on, man! If you’re going to critique me, give it a shot yourself and let’s see what happens! I thought it was pretty fun,” he shares.

“Don’t get me wrong, his critique is not without warrant. He has fair points. I watched the show, I know he wasn’t inventing it. It was just an opportunity to kind of play with that dynamic and see what would happen.”

The former Bachelor host reveals that after he left the competition, he spoke with the show’s psychologist because he “wasn’t doing very well” and came to understand that he needed validation from other people more than he thought he did.

“I finished shooting in March, so I’ve been able to spend the last couple of months, every day, kind of looking at my own self-worth and looking at my ego and looking at my self-esteem and my value, and I’m in a very different place from what I was,” he details.

“It’s really important to understand where we are making our decisions from, and if I’m making my decisions from a place of, ‘I want you to like me’, then I’m not making decisions in alignment with my values, and it can lead us astray.”

Osher adds that he’s “really grateful” for the moment with Craig because he learned a lot from it, but he would handle himself differently if it were to happen again.

“If I did it again today, the playfulness would still be there, but I can hear a tone in my voice that my feelings were hurt. And I’d like to think that wouldn’t be there so much,” he remarks. “But I’ll have to wait until they invite me back on All Stars 2: Revenge of the All Stars.”
