As anticipation builds for the Montreal Canadiens’ 2025 training camp, an intriguing storyline is quietly taking shape behind the scenes. While much of the spotlight has been on the team’s headline-grabbing acquisitions, a fierce competition is brewing for a crucial position in the crease. With Samuel Montembeault firmly established as the Canadiens’ starting goaltender, all eyes now turn to the battle for the coveted backup spot—a role that could prove pivotal as the season unfolds.

The recent addition of NHL veteran Kaapo Kahkonen has only intensified the stakes, setting the stage for a compelling showdown with promising young netminder Jakub Dobes. Despite the high-profile nature of Montreal’s summer moves, it’s this goaltending duel that could have the most significant impact on the team’s fortunes.

Comments from goaltending coach Éric Raymond have offered a glimpse into the organization’s thinking, suggesting a clear frontrunner while leaving just enough uncertainty to keep fans and analysts guessing. As the countdown to camp continues, the pressure is on for both contenders to prove they belong—and for the Canadiens to make the right call for their future between the pipes.

Believe it or not, there will be a battle at the Montreal Canadiens’ 2025 training camp for the backup goalie spot behind Samuel Montembeault.

It flew slightly under the radar due to the big-name acquisitions of players like Zachary Bolduc and Noah Dobson, but Kent Hughes also added an NHL-caliber goaltender.

Goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen signed with the Canadiens earlier this month, and according to many experts, he has a legitimate shot at becoming Montembeault’s new backup.

A few years ago, Kahkonen was even viewed as a potential No. 1 goaltender in the NHL.

Canadiens goaltending coach Éric Raymond drops a hint about the situation involving Kaapo Kahkonen and Jakub Dobes

That said, based on Raymond’s comments in a recent interview with Marc Antoine Godin (Radio-Canada), Dobes doesn’t have too much to worry about regarding his spot.

Éric Raymond is pleased with the Canadiens’ goaltending depth.

Listening to the Canadiens’ goaltending coach, it’s clear that Dobes holds a solid lead over Kahkonen-and that, at least for now, the job is his to lose.

It will be up to young Jakub Dobes to hold onto that spot!

“In answering a question, Raymond hinted that Kahkonen is the type of experienced player who could support Jacob Fowler in Laval.”

Raymond clearly sees major potential in Jakub Dobes, as shown by the tone of his responses.

It will still be a situation to monitor this September, but for Dobes, hearing this kind of endorsement is definitely reassuring.
