In the ever-unpredictable world of NHL trades, few scenarios have the power to truly shock a fanbase and ignite widespread debate across social media. Yet, as the draft approaches and rumors swirl, a bold new trade proposal has captured the imagination of Montreal Canadiens supporters and hockey insiders alike.

With the team’s rebuild underway and the front office led by Kent Hughes constantly searching for ways to accelerate the path back to contention, speculation is running wild about how Montreal might leverage its valuable draft capital to make a franchise-altering move.

Whispers of an audacious plan involving the Canadiens’ two coveted first-round picks in 2025 have begun to circulate, with some daring voices suggesting that Montreal could set its sights on acquiring a future superstar—someone capable of transforming the team’s fortunes for years to come.

While most trade chatter centers around established NHL talent, this new idea dares to dream even bigger, hinting at the possibility of landing a generational prospect who could become the face of the franchise. As excitement builds and opinions clash, one thing is certain: the Canadiens’ front office is facing a pivotal moment, and the next move could shape the destiny of hockey in Montreal.

An intriguing trade proposal has indeed surfaced on social media, involving Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.

At this point, it seems very realistic to think the Habs will try to trade their 16th overall pick in 2025, or their 17th overall pick in 2025, or even both selections.

Most experts suggesting trade offers involving these two picks also include established players coming back the other way.

For example:

Trading the 16th and 17th overall picks for a forward like Bo Horvat.

However, Phylippe Bernard proposed something very different.

Using the Montreal Canadiens’ two 2025 first-round picks to try to get their hands on generational talent Gavin McKenna?

That’s exactly what he seems to be suggesting.

“Would Montreal consider trading their 16th and 17th overall picks to a team they believe will be among the 5-6 worst in the league next year, in order to have a shot at drafting Gavin McKenna?

They could then make an offer sheet to McTavish or another player to fill gaps in the lineup.”

Do you like the idea?

That would look something like this:

To Montreal: Unprotected 2026 1st-round pick

Traded by Montreal: 16th and 17th overall picks in 2025

To pull off such a bold move, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton would need to find a team that believes it will be competitive next season, but actually won’t be.

Could the Anaheim Ducks fit that description?

It’s definitely an interesting idea.
