The hockey world has been rocked by shocking reports that the Dallas Stars are actively exploring a trade for star forward Jason Robertson, one of their most dynamic and productive players in recent years. As rumors swirl and fans struggle to make sense of the situation, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has shed light on the true motivation behind the Stars’ stunning decision.

Despite Robertson’s undeniable impact on the ice and his popularity among teammates and supporters, it appears that contract negotiations and salary cap concerns may be driving a wedge between player and team. With only one year left on his current deal and the looming prospect of a massive payday, Dallas faces a difficult crossroads that could reshape the franchise’s future.

Meanwhile, teams like the Chicago Blackhawks are already circling, eager to add Robertson’s offensive firepower to their lineup. As speculation intensifies, all eyes are on Dallas to see whether this bold move will pay off—or backfire spectacularly.

The Dallas Stars are trying to trade Jason Robertson, and the reason why is being revealed by NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman with knowledge of the situation.

Despite being one of the key contributors to the Dallas Stars over the last several years, they are rumored to be looking to move on from forward Jason Robertson.

He has a year remaining on his current deal, but could be a very attractive option for teams looking for an influx of offense.

During a recent ’32 Thoughts’ podcast, NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman theorizes that it’s a numbers situation behind the drama between the Stars and Robertson and the reported trade rumors.

I think this one purely comes down to the number. I think the Dallas Stars think very highly of Jason Robertson, especially as a person. I think Robertson thinks highly of the Stars. I just think it comes down to the number. Another thing to remember is that Dallas has some flexibility in the sense that, even though he’s got one year left under his contract, he’s not unrestricted for two years.

There is a restricted arbitration year, so in theory, they could just sit there and say we could have him for two more years at this year’s number, $7.75 million, and next year’s arbitration number if they really wanted to do that. I just think it comes down to the number. I think Dallas has an area they don’t want to go over, and the question is, does Robertson want to go over that? I can’t imagine they want to go over Rantanen, which is $12 million, so we’ll see.

One team that is linked to Robertson is the Chicago Blackhawks, who would have to send future assets to the Stars in return for Robertson in any potential deal.

If the Blackhawks acquire Robertson, it would give them another weapon to pair along with Connor Bedard in addition to Andre Burakovsky, who they just picked up from the Seattle Kraken.
