A major shift has just swept through the Montreal Canadiens’ locker room, setting the stage for a new chapter in the team’s ongoing story. In a move that few saw coming, the Canadiens have made a significant change to their goaltending lineup, signaling a fresh direction for both the franchise and one of its most talked-about young players. As hockey fans across Montreal and beyond digest the news, questions and speculation are already swirling about what this means for the team’s immediate future and long-term plans.

The timing of this development couldn’t be more critical, coming as the Canadiens look to retool and strengthen their roster for the seasons ahead. For the player at the center of this transaction, it represents a bittersweet ending and an exciting new opportunity—one that could reshape the trajectory of his professional career. Meanwhile, within the organization, doors are opening for emerging talent, and the pressure is on for the next generation of goaltenders to step up and seize their chance.

As the dust settles and fans react to the news, attention now turns to how this move will impact both the Canadiens and their newest trade partner. All eyes are on what comes next.

We have a trade to announce involving the Montreal Canadiens.

It’s done! Goaltender Cayden Primeau’s time with the Canadiens organization has come to an end.

He has just been traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a late-round draft pick.

Here’s the confirmation.

“The Canadiens have acquired a 7th-round pick in 2026 from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Cayden Primeau’s negotiating rights.”

We wish Primeau the very best of luck! He’ll get a fresh start!

This trade also opens the door for Jacob Fowler, who is now expected to take on a bigger role within the organization.

At 25 years old, Cayden Primeau is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound goalie who was originally selected in the 7th round by the Montreal Canadiens in 2017. He had a season of two halves.

First, a very rough start in the NHL (4.70 GAA and .836 save percentage), but later, an absolutely outstanding season in the AHL (1.96 GAA and .927 save percentage with a record of 21 wins, 2 losses, and 2 overtime losses).

Do you think Primeau will become a regular NHL goaltender one day?

Behind Frederik Andersen, who unfortunately is often injured, Primeau could very well get his shot in Carolina.

More details to come.
