Mitch Marner was set to become a free agent this summer, but now it appears as though he’s headed to Vegas in a sign-and-trade with the Golden Knights.

This summer was set to be one where Mitch Marner dominated the headlines in free agency after he reportedly revealed to the Toronto Maple Leafs that he was set to depart the organization in free agency.

However, there have been some suggestions of a sign-and-trade, and on Saturday, those talks got even more real after a report from top NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Maple Leafs have had discussions with Vegas about a potential deal.

That report was then confirmed by TSN’s Darren Dreger, with all signs pointing to Marner being dealt by Toronto to save the Golden Knights some cap space and get an asset in return for their departing free agent.

That asset? According to Friedman it would be Nicolas Roy that would be headed back to Toronto in any deal, allowing Marner to sign a lucrative deal while also getting the Maple Leafs a solid piece in return.

After all of the talk about Marner departing in free agency, this would be a great deal for Toronto, as they would land Roy in a deal for Marner that nobody saw coming, and to get any asset back for them would be a huge win, so let’s see how this one plays out moving forward.

There’s still some time to go before this becomes official, but as of right now, all signs are pointing towards a blockbuster deal that would see Marner officially depart Toronto and become a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, giving them another star forward to help them contend in the loaded Western Conference.
