We have an interesting detail regarding a trade currently being negotiated between the Montreal Canadiens and the San Jose Sharks.

First, let’s recap what we know.

1- The Montreal Canadiens are discussing/have discussed a trade involving Carey Price with the San Jose Sharks.

2- Now that his large signing bonus has been paid, on this September 1st, Carey Price will apparently be traded any minute.

3- The three teams mentioned by NHL sources as potential destinations for Price are, the San Jose Sharks, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Chicago Blackhawks.

That said, there is an interesting particularity with the Sharks.

The Sharks would trade an AHL player to the Montreal Canadiens if they acquire Carey Price

Why them, and not necessarily the Penguins or the Blackhawks?

Because the Sharks are at the NHL’s maximum contract limit.. plain and simple!

If they do take on Price’s contract, they will need to trade one in return.

“One thing I’ve been told to watch with San Jose is that they’re at 49/50 contracts & they want to sign Michael Misa ASAP.

The Habs have 43 contracts out of 50 lined up, so any prospective deal between the parties would require contracts coming back, which MTL can accommodate.”

– Marco D’Amico

“The San Jose Sharks are one contract away from the 50-contract limit and have not yet reached an agreement with Michael Misa.

AHL/ECHL players could thus be included in a trade involving Carey Price’s contract.”

– Nicolas Cloutier

There you have it!

If Price is traded to San Jose, expect the Canadiens to receive a player (a contract) in return, notably..
