In a move that has sent shockwaves across the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks have made a blockbuster announcement with direct ties to the Montreal Canadiens—a decision that is already sparking heated debates and second-guessing in both fanbases.

With just a few words, the Blackhawks revealed a long-term commitment to one of their most promising young stars, Frank Nazar, locking him in for seven years and over $46 million.

But what makes this signing truly remarkable isn’t just the talent of Nazar himself, or the size of the contract—it’s the dramatic backstory that connects him to a pivotal trade involving the Canadiens.

As the details of this deal emerge, questions are swirling about what could have been for Montreal. How did a single draft pick, once briefly in the Canadiens’ possession, end up becoming a cornerstone for a rival franchise?

What decisions led to this moment, and how might it haunt the Habs for years to come? The story of Frank Nazar’s rise, and the trade that made it possible, is far more complex—and controversial—than it appears at first glance. Before passing judgment, readers will want to dive into the twists, turns, and lingering “what ifs” that make this one of the most talked-about moves of the offseason.

The Chicago Blackhawks have just made a major last-minute announcement, and yes, it has a connection with the Montreal Canadiens.

They just announced the signing of their forward Frank Nazar, for 7 seasons and for $46.13 million.

He is their man, he is their second center of the future!

A trade that turned sour for the Montreal Canadiens

Frank Nazar is the player that the Blackhawks acquired with the pick received from the Montreal Canadiens in the Kirby Dach trade. Ouch.

Let’s just say the Habs could really use a Frank Nazar right now.

At 21 years old, Frank Nazar is a right-handed centerman who collected 24 points in 21 games last season in the AHL, as well as 26 points in 53 games with the Chicago Blackhawks.

He was indeed the 13th overall pick by the Hawks in 2022, and yes, it’s the pick that Chicago received thanks to the Kirby Dach trade.

That day, on July 7, 2022, the 13th overall pick was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens (in the Alexander Romanov trade) and was immediately re-traded by Kent Hughes to the Blackhawks in the Kirby Dach transaction.

More details to follow.
