After facing a series of setbacks and unique challenges in the first week of the competition, this year’s contestants on The Block were handed a mammoth task in week two. Not only did they have to renovate two kids bedrooms, but they also had to upholster a bedhead that would be showcased in one of the rooms.
There was plenty on the line this week, with the winners receiving around $175,000 worth of appliances from e&s in addition to the $10,000 prize. With all five teams having the exact same layout, timeframe, and suggested budget of $15,000, here’s what they each presented to the judges.
House 1 (Emma and Ben)
Emma and Ben received high praise for both of their rooms from the judges, who said they had been executed to a really high standard. They received some criticism in their second room for the functionality and wall panelling, which was a “last-minute mistake” because they didn’t have enough wallpaper.
“They delivered exactly what I would expect from a Block bedroom,” Darren Palmer remarked.
Total spend: $17,554
Total score: 25.5/30

House 2 (Han and Can)
While Han and Can’s bedrooms received initial praise from the judges for the wow-factor, they questioned whether it was the right decision to do a nursery. Shaynna Blaze said their styling was “not functional”, “overwhelming”, and “too much”, but complimented the cloud bedhead, artwork and furniture.
“It’s different, it’s igniting. These girls have creativity, and they’ve gone out on a limb,” Shaynna shared.
Total spend: $15,477

House 3 (Britt and Taz)
The judges immediately fell in love with Britt and Taz’s first kids’ bedroom thanks to its colour palette, layout, and unique bedhead. They had a similar reaction to the second bedroom, and Shaynna said they were nailing the modern contemporary country theme.
“It feels extremely luxurious, it’ll shoot beautifully. I truly believe this has been hit out of the ball park,” Marty Fox said, adding that the level of sophistication was similar to 2023 champions Steph and Gian.
Total spend: $16,970

House 4 (Sonny and Alicia)
While Sonny and Alicia’s gamble with their bold plaid wallpaper paid off, the judges criticised their attention to detail and finishings. They also argued that the couple missed the brief in the second bedroom and didn’t design it for kids; however, Sonny and Alicia said they were playing the long game and want to appeal to a broad range of buyers.
“I am enamoured with everything I see on that wall and in front of it. I’m really, really impressed,” Darren gushed.
Total spend: $14,970

House 5 (Robby and Mat)
After taking out the win last week, Robby and Mat copped plenty of criticism for their kids bedrooms. The judges said their first bedroom had a great “sense of fun”, but their second bedroom was like walking into an “upmarket nursing home”,
“Boys, what have you done?” Shaynna questioned. “It’s gone to a very old styling aesthetic.”

Who won The Block week one?
Ultimately, it was Britt and Taz who took out the win with a score of 28, with Emma and Ben coming in second place on 25.5. The Western Australian couple added $10,000 to their budget as well as around $175,000 worth of appliances from e&s, including a fridge, oven, dishwasher, and washing machine.
Meanwhile, for the second week in a row, Sonny and Alicia received an additional $10,000 for spending the least amount of money on their rooms.
