They’ve received some of the highest scores on this year’s season of The Block, but House 3’s Britt and Taz were roasted by the judges in Sunday night’s episode after revealing their rumpus room. While the other teams utilised the space as a second living area or home theatre, the West Australian couple decided to turn it into a wellness area.

They installed upholstery curtains on the ceiling and walls as well as a TV and fridge, and filled the room with two reformer pilates machines, a yoga mat, and gym equipment. Britt and Taz’s listing agent and Buxton Ballarat director Mark Nunn previously told Yahoo Lifestyle that the room was essential to House 3 being marketed as “the wellness house”.

“Daylesford is known as the spa country of Victoria, so a lot of people get out of Melbourne and go to Daylesford for the weekend just to rejuvenate, relax, have a spa, have a sauna, hot and cold plunge pools,” he explained. “We have a spa, a sauna, hot and cold plunge pools, those types of things, as well as the pilates room in our property. So our target market is the wellness-type buyer.”

Despite their intentions, the judges criticised Britt and Taz’s room for limiting the appeal of their house and having only one living room compared to their competitors.

“Fundamentally, they have just reduced the value of the home,” Marty Fox declared. “This is a non-negotiable. They really need to listen to us three and the fact that this application is fundamentally incorrect for a campaign in Daylesford on a home of this size.”

Shelley Craft weighs in on controversial room

The Block’s co-host Shelley Craft couldn’t agree more with the judges, telling Yahoo Lifestyle that although the room is designed to be multipurpose, most buyers won’t be able to look past the current set-up.

“You can say, ‘Oh well, if you don’t do pilates, just put in a couch’ — and working in real estate, I 100 per cent appreciate that — but not everybody has that vision,” she remarks. “And also, if you’re buying a completely furnished, finished, beautiful home, the last thing you want to do is then spend budget changing the bloody thing.

“So to say, ‘Oh, I’ll just take that out’, isn’t as easy as it sounds for some people to actually visualise. And then other humans will walk in and go, ‘I don’t need this many living spaces, this is a great idea to have a wellness retreat’. Public opinion we’ll hear throughout the series, but not until auction day will we know whether that was a good idea or not.”

Viewers divided over Britt and Taz’s decision

Fans were clearly divided on social media following the episode, with many declaring that they loved the room and thought the judges were too harsh.

“Don’t agree! I would LOVE this in my home. Especially if I was spending millions. I don’t need multiple lounge rooms,” one person wrote, while another added, “I’d much prefer to have a yoga studio than two lounge areas. Once they do the outdoor area too, this is all going to flow so nicely”.

“I love your reformer room, it looks beautiful — with the fridge too, goodness, you wouldn’t put it in the garage, the reformer beds are too expensive to just put in a blooming garage, silly judges,” a third remarked.

Meanwhile, others agreed that Britt and Taz should’ve turned the room into a second living room to increase their market appeal.

“For families, you absolutely need two lounge spaces, for a couple, the yoga studio is awesome. I do feel they should have went with two lounge spaces, but it’s still a well done room,” one viewer commented.

“They blew it. Should have had some way to make it into something else. There is no storage or nothing in there once you remove the pilates machines,” someone else commented, followed by a different user who said, “Have to agree if you have four kids, you are going to want another lounge, even just to escape.”
