What a day in the history of the National Hockey League! Earlier today, as you know, Alex Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s record, he scored his 895th career goal and became the all-time leading goal scorer.

After that incredible moment, a ceremony immediately followed and paused the game for several long minutes. A game that was eventually won by the New York Islanders.

It was an incredible moment.

So many memorable moments as the NHL pauses to celebrate the Great Chase.

Wayne Gretzky’s No. 9 pin brought Gordie Howe’s spirit onto the ice.

The gift from Janet to Nastya mirrored what Colleen Howe did 31 years ago.

And the emotion on Gretzky’s face as he shook Ovi’s hand said it all.

“The legacy of hockey passes down,” said No. 99.

Let’s talk about that historic handshake.

Wayne Gretzky had said he would be the first to shake Ovechkin’s hand after he broke his record, and he kept his word!
