To mark National Volunteer Week, the KIIS Network’s Kyle & Jackie O have turned a spotlight on local heroes, surprising the volunteers of Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter (NBWS).

NBWS is a frontline service providing support to women facing homelessness, domestic violence, financial hardship, substance abuse and mental health challenges.

During today’s segment, Kyle & Jackie O spoke with the shelter’s coordinator Kim Baesanu about the life-changing work being done behind closed doors.

“There are a lot of heartbreaking sides of what we do,” said Kim.

“But there is also joy. We open the door for women to stat their life again.”

In a show of appreciation, ‘Intern Pete’ Deppeler was stationed at the Manly Pacific Hotel, where 40 NBWS volunteers were treated to a fully catered brunch at Cibaria Manly.

Each volunteer was given bunches of flowers and beauty pamper bags and treated to a surprise live performance by Samantha Jade.

Kyle & Jackie O also donated $10,000 to the shelter to help further with its mission.

Jackie then raised her hand and made a personal commitment to do more, saying to Kim “If you’ll have me, I would love to volunteer and do whatever you need – and do it on a regular basis.”

Kim welcomed her with open arms, officially inducting Jackie into the shelter’s cherished volunteer group known as the ‘Joy Sprinklers’.

Kyle Sandilands said “It only takes one person to extend their hand of help that makes such a life-changing difference to another human being.”
