The Montreal Canadiens’ development camp has always been a stage for young prospects to make their mark, but few have generated as much buzz in recent days as Luke Mittelstadt. Emerging as a standout among his peers, Mittelstadt quickly caught the attention of coaches and fans alike with his smart, efficient play and textbook defensive skills. Praised by veteran figures within the organization, he seemed poised to take the next big step in his hockey career—signing his first professional contract and officially joining the Canadiens’ system.

But just as expectations were reaching a fever pitch, news broke that Mittelstadt would not be signing with Montreal for the upcoming season. The decision came as a surprise to many, especially given the high praise he received from Director of Player Development Rob Ramage and other team officials. Instead of turning pro, Mittelstadt has chosen a different path, prioritizing his education and his pursuit of a championship at the collegiate level. This unexpected move has set off a wave of speculation and debate among fans and analysts, raising questions about his future with the franchise and what it might mean for the Canadiens’ long-term plans.

We have an update on one of Francis Bouillon’s favorites from the most recent Montreal Canadiens development camp.

Luke Mittelstadt, who was one of the biggest revelations in recent days and is quickly becoming a standout young player in the Canadiens’ system, has just declined to sign with the team for the upcoming season.

This comes after receiving plenty of praise from Bouillon..

Many believed Mittelstadt would sign his first professional contract with the Montreal Canadiens, but he has now turned down that offer-at least for the time being.

It’s a notable development, as this decision brings Mittelstadt dangerously close to full free agency.

Will he pull an Adam Fox or a Kevin Hayes? Stay tuned.

Young Luke Mittelstadt Refuses to Immediately Sign With the Montreal Canadiens

It really does seem like the offer was there.

Director of Player Development Rob Ramage says the Canadiens would have signed Mittelstadt if he had left the NCAA ranks, but he didn’t want to go that route for now.

“Ramage says the Habs would’ve signed Mittelstadt if he left college, but that he wants to get his degree and chase a championship.

He just plays the game textbook. His angles, he’s very efficient, he’s very smart. He’s not a killer, but his coach loves him. He’s consistent.”

That said, as Ramage also explains, Mittelstadt is a young man who places great importance on his education-which is fantastic-so that may simply explain the decision.

Luke Mittelstadt, 22, is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound left-shot defenseman who is shaping up to be a great seventh-round pick by the Montreal Canadiens.

Drafted 197th overall in 2023, he recorded 59 points over the past three seasons in the NCAA with the University of Minnesota.

Yes, he is the brother of forward Casey Mittelstadt.
