It’s Rumpus Week on The Block but what the heck actually is a rumpus room?
On The Block 2025, the confusion is evident.
From a simple defintion of a second sitting room to a more entertainment focused area to… a gym(?), it’s all up in air!
Ahead of Sunday’s Room Reveal, we’ve done a deep dive into the good ol’ rumpus to figure out what it’s all about.
What is a rumpus room?
Put simply, a rumpus room is a multi-purpose living space – typically for loud, recreational activities (the word rumpus actually means ‘a noisy disturbance’!)
They’re a space for fun and entertainment, serving as a second living room, a kids’ play area or casual ‘hangout spot’ in the home.
In the past, they were typically found in attics or basements, but these days are much more common in the main areas of homes.
However, what actually goes in them is all a little… up to interpreation.
Emma said at the start of rumpus week, her plan “didn’t make much sense yet”. (Nine)
“A rumpus room is sort of like a theatre, cinema room, another seating, entertaining sort of area,” Britt explained.
While Emma simply said it “can be a lot of different things”.
“Put a pool table in there, put a yoga mat in there,” she said.
As such, Rumpus Week has often given teams a bit of freedom to take a big swing, as seen on The Block over the years.
In 2024’s Phillip Island season, the floorplan gave teams the chance to create an Office and Rumpus Room – and while some stuck to the plan, the two teams who took a punt came out on top with a joint win: Ricky and Haydn for their creative games room idea and Maddy and Charlotte as they started a dedicated ‘guest retreat’ area.
Last year, Ricky and Haydn turned their mezzanine space into a rumpus and games room. (Nine)
So when it comes to Rumpus Week on The Block, think less about a strict definition and more about spaces that are flexible and can adapt to meet its owner’s changing needs!
What are The Block teams doing with their rumpus spaces?
This year’s floorplans include a much larger rumpus space than in 2024.
While some teams are creating a more traditional ‘second living room’ area, others are trying some a little different.

In House 2, Han and Can are all-in on the entertainment aspect.
“We’re making an entertainment space, a place where you can hang out, watch a movie, unwind [and] relax,” Can said.
Their neighbours in House 3, Britt and Taz, are throwing out the definition and instead creating a ‘wellness area’, swapping out couches for reformer Pilates machines and games for yoga mats.
Britt and Taz are taking a big risk! Will it pay off? (Nine)
“We made the decision fairly early on in consultation with our real estate agent, landscaper, as well as our chippy that this area is not really somewhere where you sit and just watch TV,” Britt explained.
“We’ve got the living room for that. People come here, they’re very into their health, into their wellness, so an idea was thrown around was to turn it into like a gym/wellness area.
“It will make sense come Landscaping Week for us because the plan is, directly outside our rumpus we have a spa, a sauna, and an ice bath so it’s a whole wellness area.”
It’s certainly a bold call!
Taz said they hadn’t revealed their “top secret plans” to the other teams.
“Our rumpus room defines the term point of difference,” he claimed.
