A UK-bound Air India flight carrying hundreds of passengers has crashed shortly after take-off in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.

Pictures from the scene show a large plume of smoke following the crash, with five fire-fighting vehicles and other emergency services currently working at the scene.

The plane was headed to London’s Gatwick airportin the UK, Air India said, while police officers said it crashed in a civilian area near the airport.

According to the Reuters news agency, at least 242 people were on board.

There have been no concrete reports as yet of the number of injured passengers, nor is it known whether there have been any fatalities.

Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation, told The Associated Press that the flight, a Boeing 787, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off. There were 232 passengers and 12 crew members onboard and emergency teams have been activated at the airport, he said.

A spokesperson for Ahmedabad Airport has said that all flights have been suspended following the earlier Air India crash. Emergency crews are continuing to work at the scene, with no word yet on the number of injured people, nor whether there were any fatalities.

How many people were on board the Air India flight?

According to local reports, the plane had a capacity of 300 people but was not a full flight. News agency ANI reported that there were a total of 242 people were on board the flight, citing Gujarat state’s police control room.

India’s CNN News18 TV channel, however, said there were 220 passengers and 12 crew on the plane.

Plane bound for UK crashes after takeoff

An Air India flight bound for the UK has crashed after takeoff with hundreds of passengers on board.

Local media reports that emergency services are on the scene, with at least five fire engines in attendance.

There is no word as yet on how many people have been injured in the crash, nor whether there are any fatalities, although visuals from the scene showed people being moved in stretchers and being taken away in ambulances.
