They are bringing their own unique flair to The Block!

Best mates from Adelaide, Robby and Mat, will bring plenty of entertainment to The Block this season.

In fact, in a jaw-dropping confession before this season went to air (Don’t look now, Scotty), Mat admits he has never even watched an episode of the show.

“If someone had told me with a crystal ball the likelihood of going on The Block or my house burning down, I would have said our house burning down,” Mat said, adding it was actually Robby’s idea to apply.

Despite their lack of renovating experience, the boys aren’t complete rookies when it comes to the building game. They’ve spent years building businesses and have nailed it each time.

On top of that, both Robby and Mat got on really well with cast and crew – and we all know that in a competition like The Block, that can make the world of difference.

“We formed such good friendships, we really supported each other and looked after each other,” Robby continued.

But that’s not all. The best mates are preparing to install a secret wine cellar, which is guaranteed to turn the competition on its head.

Week 1: Bathroom

The best mates were given nines by Marty and Darren, and Shayna gave them 8 and a ½. This gave them a score of 26 and a ½, which made them the winners.

Robby and Mat were praised for their choice of colours and textures, but also for being the only team to have horizontal towel racks!

Robby and Mat were also the only team that had an ergonomically suitable vanity.

Week 2: Kids’ Bedrooms

All three judges thought Robby and Mat’s first child’s room was adorable.

Specifically, they loved the playfulness and games throughout the room.

However, they thought the room’s wardrobe was too close to the beds.

Week 2: Kids’ Bedrooms

Their bedhead raised eyebrows during the styling challenge, and the judges were not impressed when they saw it in the second kids’ bedroom.

Along with their styling choices, Marty said their kids’ bedroom was an “upmarket nursing home”.

Darren said the fabric reminded him of “Hugh Hefner’s coat”.

“We’re judging kids’ rooms, and it’s almost like someone’s gone in for a cut and colour, and they’ve left with a perm,” Marty added.

Robby and Mat received a score of 7 and a ½  from Darren and  6 and a ½  from Shayna and Marty, giving them an overall score of 20 and a ½.

Week 3: Main Bathroom

While the best friends were criticised for not taking more risks in their design, layout, and styling, overall, the judges were very complimentary of the “luxurious” feel of the space.

“From a buyer’s perspective, they’ll love this. The whole room together is a real estate agent’s dream, even though it doesn’t have the punch [the other en-suites do], Marty exclaimed upon seeing the room.

Overall, Robby and Mat were awarded 27 and a ½ points overall for their efforts.

Week 4: Main Bedroom and Walk-In Robe

Robby and Mat were pleasantly surprised with the feedback they received during week four.

All three judges praised the spaciousness of their bedroom and walk-in robe, as well as their attention to detail.

However, Shaynna said they had too many Bronley paintings in their room.

They also encouraged the pair to include a fireplace in their house, as they’re the only ones that don’t have one!

For their reveal, they received 25 points overall – a 9 from Darren, and 8 from Marty and Shaynna.

Week 5: Living and Dining Room

The boys took home the win in week five after using their one-point gnome to secure a final score of 29 and a ½ from the judges, who said they “nailed it.”

Out of all the houses, Marty said house five was his favourite, with both Shaynna and Darren also in awe of the space.

While the feedback was mostly positive, Robby and Mat’s lack of finishes and corking prevented them from getting a perfect score. Shaynna also noted that she would have liked the wall where the art was adorned painted with a different colour.

Week 6: Rumpus Room

It was a disastrous week for the boys, who were unable to finish their rumpus room due to a lack of floorboards.

The judges were critical of their lack of project management skills, the abundance of plants, the styling, and even the colour scheme.

“It’s not inviting, it’s not warm,” it’s not Daylesford,” Marty put it bluntly.

Week 7: Kitchen

After spending $19,413 on their kitchen, Robby and Mat finished in equal first with Britt and Taz.

All three judges unanimously agreed that their buyers would love their kitchen.

“This is the most Daylesford kitchen that I’ve seen today,” Marty said.

“It won’t date, it’s timeless and hard to fault. They are appealing to all buyers without being bland and boring.”

The only issue the judges had, was with the secret door in the kitchen that opened to the master bedroom. While it looked great, they said it was impractical.

Week 8: Guest Suite

Robby and Mat also did not finish their guest suite, and presented an incomplete bathroom.

Even though it was unfinished, the judges said it had potential. If it was finished, it would have been in the running to win.

“From a design perspective and then a functionality perspective, this layout of this bathroom is perfect,” Marty said.

They were also praised for their styling, with their hand-painted wall design being a major standout.

Week 9: Back of House

The best friends had high hopes for their European-inspired laundry, but the judges were critical of its small size in relation to the rest of the property.

Robby and Mat were, however, complimented for their powder room, with the judges suggesting they should have tiled their mudroom instead, and added in some more hooks and rails.

In the garage, the boys were also praised for their concrete, the car cleaning kit, and the overhead lights.

Week 10: Terrace and Shed

The time finally came for Robby and Mat to unveil their underground wine cellar, and luckily for them, it paid off!

Their shed, which was converted into a gym, was also highly praised, as was their outdoor alfresco area.

“This is in a league of its own,” Marty said.

“It’s literally got everything you want,” Darren added.

Not only that, they won with a perfect score of 30, which was the highest mark of the season.

Week 12: Backyard and Pool

Robby and Mat spent $57,151 on their backyard and pool, which paid off in the end!

The pair achieved an overall score of 38 which had them in first place, before Emma and Ben used their secret gnome and beat them by half a point.

Despite this, all of the judges loved their space. They were blown away by their pickleball court and outdoor fireplace.

Even though they thought their cabana was simpler than the others, they still loved it.

Robby, 37, is a business owner and barber who loves soccer and once played in the National Premier League. He also shares a son, Brooks, with his partner Alyssa.

But before he became one of the world’s best and most respected hair experts, Mat was one of Australia’s best figure skaters.

How did Robby and Mat meet?

They met over a decade ago in Adelaide when Mat cut Robby’s hair.

“We are just two best mates, a hairdresser and a barber, a gay and a straight,” Robby says of the pair’s special friendship.

“I think a lot of people will connect with us really well.”

Mat also reckons viewers can expect to see lots of laughing from the boys who don’t take life too seriously and love to have a good time.

“It’s who we are,” he says.

“I think that’s why we’re on the show. We didn’t get on the show because of our ability to be able to renovate. We make people laugh. We enjoyed the process.
