Benjamin Hall, a seasoned Fox News war correspondent, had spent years reporting from the world’s most perilous regions—Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. However, nothing prepared him for the day he became the headline himself.

The Attack in Horenka

On March 14, 2022, while covering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Hall was traveling with cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski and Ukrainian producer Sasha Kuvshynova through the village of Horenka near Kyiv.

Suddenly, their convoy was struck by a series of Russian bombs. Hall, sitting in the middle seat of the vehicle, was knocked unconscious and severely injured.

In his memoir, Saved: A War Reporter’s Mission to Make It Home, Hall recounts the harrowing experience. Despite the chaos and devastation, he felt a profound sense of connection.

He vividly describes seeing his daughters, particularly his daughter Honor, who urged him to escape the burning vehicle. This moment of clarity and love became his lifeline.

The Fight for Survival

Hall regained consciousness to find himself engulfed in flames. His right leg was nearly severed, and his left foot was barely attached. Despite the excruciating pain, he managed to drag himself out of the vehicle just before a third explosion struck.

His colleague, Pierre Zakrzewski, lay nearby. Zakrzewski’s final words were, “They are Russians,” before he succumbed to his injuries. Ukrainian special forces soon arrived, rescuing Hall and transporting him to a Kyiv hospital.

Hall’s injuries were catastrophic:

Right leg amputated below the knee

Left foot amputated

Left eye blinded

Severe burns and shrapnel wounds

After initial treatment in Kyiv, Hall was airlifted to Germany and then to the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. There, he underwent nearly 30 surgeries, including skin grafts and reconstructive procedures. The medical team worked tirelessly to stabilize him and begin the long process of rehabilitation.

Honoring Fallen Colleagues

The loss of Zakrzewski and Kuvshynova weighed heavily on Hall. In his memoir, he reflects on their shared experiences and the bond they formed in the field.

Zakrzewski, known for his generosity and optimism, had even considered adopting an abandoned baby he met in a Ukrainian children’s hospital. Hall writes, “Pierre believed the world was more wonderful than frightening. He taught me that even in tragedy, there’s something good to be found.”

Sharing His Story

In March 2023, on the one-year anniversary of the attack, Hall released his memoir, Saved. The book details his experiences in war zones and the miraculous events that led to his survival.

Shortly after, Fox News aired the documentary Sacrifice and Survival: A Story from the Front Line, offering viewers an intimate look into Hall’s journey.

A Mission of Meaning

Despite the immense challenges, Hall remains resolute. He believes that his survival carries a purpose—to honor the lives lost and to continue telling the stories of those affected by war. He states, “If you don’t get up right now and do something positive, then you’ve wasted everything. You’ve wasted Pierre’s life.”
