They may have won last week’s room reveal with their impressive bathroom, but Robby and Mat failed to please the judges in Sunday night’s episode of The Block with their kids’ bedrooms. The best mates received a score of 20.5 out of 30, with Marty Fox comparing their second room to an “upmarket nursing home”.

“Boys, what have you done?” Shaynna Blaze questioned upon seeing their custom-made bedhead and minimal kid-friendly styling. “It’s gone to a very old styling aesthetic.”

It’s not just the show’s judges who have criticised their rooms, with Chris Carroll, director of TLC Interiors, telling Yahoo Lifestyle that he believes House 5 had a “disappointing” week.

“Robby and Mat had the biggest fall from grace between week one and two. Some teams are better at designing wet rooms but flounder when it comes to designing and styling living spaces and bedrooms. I hope this isn’t the case for the boys,” he shares.

“It has to be said, though; there’s barely one positive thing you can say about either of their spaces.”

As for this week’s winners, House 3’s Britt and Taz, who received a score of 28 from the judges, Chris declares that they had “one of the best kids’ rooms The Block has seen in recent years”.

“From the neutral colour palette to the patterned wallpaper, it was packed with charm,” he details. “It ticked all the boxes; a room a kid would like, a space a buyer can appreciate, and most importantly, it could easily convert into a guest bedroom without having to make major design changes. They deserved the win for that room alone.”

Chris adds that his biggest tip for viewers thinking of renovating a kids’ bedroom is to consider the longevity of the design.

“The best approach is to lock in a theme, but keep the shell of the room fairly versatile,” he says. “Kids change their interests so quickly, so you’re better off going wild with smaller elements like artwork and quilt cover sets, removable wallpaper and/or decals.

“Keep walls, floors, window coverings and pendant lights timeless. That way you won’t be spending buckets of money completely redoing the room every five years.”

While it’s still early days on this year’s season of The Block, Chris shares that House 1’s Emma and Ben are “showing the most promise”.

“They’re not afraid to be bold; taking risks with colour, pattern and texture all while ensuring the rooms remain aspirational but approachable,” he remarks.

“They’re delivering the unexpected without it feeling garish or amateur, which is a line so many inexperienced Blockheads cross. They seem to get it almost right with each room, which is admirable so early in the game.”
