Farmer Wants A Wife is one of Australia’s most successful dating shows, with 18 couples still together to this day. Those 18 couples have also brought 27 adorable children into the world.

Fans have loved watching the show over the years because it’s worlds apart from shows like Married At First Sight, where the drama comes first, and romance comes second (maybe). However, over the years, Farmer Wants A Wife has significantly pumped up the drama, and fans are not too happy about it, so where does this leave the show and its future? Will audiences stick around if they continue to follow the path MAFS has paved?

Fans have previously pointed out that the Australian version of the show and the American version are wildly different in terms of the drama, with one Instagram user writing, “The differences between the Australian show and the US show are amazing. Australia is worth watching and rooting for couples! No controversy, people are there to actually find love.”

However, not everyone agrees, with many others saying there’s too much drama nowadays, “What is wrong with the producers of Farmer Wants A Wife, do they not want us to watch a good wholesome show that we as viewers loved watching?”

“This programme is now like MAFS, it used to be more wholesome…” another said.

“These women have absolutely no intention of living on the farm,” a third added. “The show doesn’t even pretend to be genuine anymore.”

Journalist and pop culture commentator, Melissa Hoyer, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that “love it or hate it” reality shows are only going to get more and more dramatic, because that’s what gets us talking.

“The ‘reality’ now with reality shows is very much the more conflict the better,” she tells us. “Just look at the rating success of something like MAFS. Love it or hate it, it certainly has everyone talking, purely because we vicariously love to watch other people make totally disastrous relationship decisions, complete fools of themselves and do simply horrendous things – mainly in attempt to grab some more airtime!”

Melissa continues, “Even look at something like Bondi Shore – I watched it so you didn’t have to – even though it didn’t get the numbers in Australia that MAFS did (but no doubt will internationally) the majority of the behaviour from each of the influencer wannabes was basically appalling, but that said, it’s weirdly riveting television! Work that little creepy scenario out!”

When it comes to Farmer Wants A Wife, however, Melissa acknowledges that it’s never been more about the drama than about the budding romances.

“When it comes to Farmer Wants A Wife, incredibly graphic conflict and overt sexuality have never been part of the agenda or show formula,” she explains. “If anything, the down-home, feel-good aspect to it has always been a welcome change to other love show offerings.

“That said, it will be interesting to see whether Farmer Wants A Wife producers do start pushing the conflict envelope/editing procedure in order to make it a little more risqué.

“No doubt we will see very soon!”

Don’t worry, Farmer Wants A Wife fans, Melissa does think the show will continue to live a long and happy life on our screens!

“I still think Farmer Wants A Wife will survive on our screens, simply if it does stick to its more down-home formula,” she tells us. “In a strange way, I think many of us are looking for some feel-good TV as opposed to constant bickering, narcissism, confected drama and overt sexuality.

“That said, producers will still have to include some drama because, on the other hand, television viewers have all come to expect an element of conflict and drama, but in the case of this show, let’s hope it won’t be as unnecessarily nasty, tacky and self-indulgent.”
