After staying silent on social media while this year’s season of Farmer Wants A Wife aired on TV, Clarette has finally spoken out about her controversial portrayal on the reality show. The 35-year-old English teacher became one of the most divisive participants this season as viewers criticised her online and accused her of being “too jealous” about Farmer Thomas’ relationships with the other women.

She didn’t do anything particularly ‘villainous’ throughout the filming experience; however, she was often shown not smiling as dramatic music played in the background, culminating in the viewers’ strong dislike towards her. Unlike typical reality TV ‘villains’, she also walked away from the experience with plenty of friends, including Thomas’ runner-up, Rachael, who described her to Yahoo Lifestyle as a “beautiful person inside and out”.

Following Monday night’s reunion episode, where she and Farmer Thomas announced they were still together, Clarette posted a heartfelt essay online detailing her experience on the show and her negative edit’.

She said she felt it was important to “speak up and write [her] truth”, not just for herself, but “for others who already have or may one day face similar misrepresentations”.

Clarette shared that she wasn’t overly familiar with Farmer Wants A Wife when her mum sent her a link encouraging her to apply, but Farmer Thomas’ profile stood out to her because they were the same age and shared similar values, goals, and passions.

She initially abandoned her application after getting halfway through, but was soon called by a producer who encouraged her to finish it as she sounded like a “strong match”. She was also told by a medium that she would meet someone in an unconventional way and end up moving to the country – all of which have since become true.

“I’ve always led with love,” she wrote. “Passion can be mistaken for jealousy, honesty for hostility. But my intentions were rooted in grace and authenticity. Celebrating others while waiting for your own moment is a rare kind of grace.”

Clarette admits she had watched reality TV before and always believed it to be true, saying, “Oh they must really be like that because how can you make somebody into somebody they’re not?”. However, she describes the version of herself on screen as “a curated character” crafted through “orchestrated edits and questionable storytelling”.

“What followed were staged scenarios and frankenbitten soundbites – spliced phrases used to shape a narrative I never consented to. The result? A distorted image and perception of me,” she shared.

“I’ve been called ‘polarising’, ‘dramatic’ and ‘disingenuous’ (and they’re the ones I can print). But that woman on screen however edited – was also complex, vulnerable, raw; it was just never shown. It’s still too easy to misconstrue a woman’s strength as a threat. When women go after what they want, not wanting to waste their own or others’ time it’s reframed through desperation and criticism. But even with the misrepresentation, the experience gave me something invaluable: perspective, growth, and a deeper understanding of my worth.”

Towards the end of the post, Clarette addressed a series of rumours that had emerged online throughout the show.

“I’m not a paid actor (although that did make me laugh), I didn’t go on for a visa (I have an Australian passport), I didn’t go on to win a prize (my life is not a game to me),” she detailed. “I’m not a gold digger (I am financially independent), I moved here on my own, I live in my own house, I pay my own bills and I found myself a full-time job.”

She also remarked that the strength from a woman willing to give up her whole life to move to the farm for love “deserves celebration, not criticism”.

Clarette ended the post revealing that meeting Tom has been “real”, “difficult”, and “emotional”, but the experience has also made them “stronger” as a couple.

“Would I go through that process again? No. But do I regret it? Not for a second,” she remarked. “We should have left a lot sooner than we did but unfortunately when you’re in a contract and people’s jobs are dependent on you staying it puts you in a difficult position.

“This experience cracked us open but in that cracking came growth. That’s why we did it – not for 5 minutes of fame, not for drama – but for the slim, shimmering possibility of something real – and we found it.”

Clarette’s co-stars respond to her post

Clarette’s post has since been flooded with supportive messages from her season 15 co-stars, including Farmer Corey’s runner-up Chloe, who said: “Perfectly written Clarette. People definitely underestimate the power of editing. There is always more to the story than what makes it to the screen.”

“You are incredible Clarette, such a beautiful and stoic woman, Thomas is one lucky man,” Keeley wrote. “Wishing you all the very best and looking forward to seeing your next chapter.”

“So beautifully said! I enjoyed watching you and how you went after what you wanted and demanded what you deserve! So happy for you,” Olivia added, followed by Sarah who shared, “The best read to encapsulate an insane experience xx loved every minute”.
