Natalie Bassingthwaighte has spilled the details on her engagement to partner Pip Loth. The couple revealed their relationship in 2023 — the same year the Rogue Traders singer announced her split from husband of 13-years and former bandmate, Cameron McGlinchey.

The Rogue Traders singer proposed to Pip, who uses they/them pronouns, at Niagra Falls in a beautiful and unexpected moment earlier this month. Natalie revealed she had enlisted the help of a woman who “writes poetry on the spot” 650 kilometres away in New York.

“That was how I actually proposed is I flew her from New York to Canada, and she’s sitting at Niagara Falls with this little typewriter,” Nat told The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

Natalie said that usually people just come up to poet Hannah Monsour and tell them a little bit about themselves so she can write an instant poem.

“But I reached out to her and said, ‘Would you go to Niagara Falls?’ And so, she’s sitting there with this 1952 typewriter, and I go, ‘Hey, babe, should we get a poem?’

“Like, I was s***ting myself, I’ve never felt so nervous in my life.”

Prior to the big proposal, Natalie FaceTimed with Hannah and told her their love story, including how they met, but also wanted it to feel organic in the moment.

“[Hannah] just made it up on the spot from what we said and what I told her, and it was just perfect,” Natalie said.

When Kyle questioned if the poem was really made up on the spot, Nat was definitive in her answer.

“It 100 per cent was made up on the spot, because most of it was after what we just said in that moment,” she said.

“And that’s the beauty of it … we decided that that was the best way to go, instead of her writing something or pre-planning to see what would happen in the moment and then Pip read it.”

The former Neighbours star joked that Pip was easily distracted and had to push for them to focus on what was unfolding.

Kyle questioned what Natalie would have done if Pip had said no and the singer joked that she would have cancelled the filming of the video, left Canada and taken the poem with her.

Jackie ‘O’ Henderson said she thought Natalie had taken the proposal to a whole new level, commending her on the effort she put in.

The radio host suggested that this is what happens in a queer relationship, and Natalie agreed.

“That is absolutely true, the romance is up a level,’ she said.

She announced her relationship with Pip during an appearance on the Something To Talk About podcast.

“I am in a beautiful relationship with a woman who makes my heart smile and makes me really happy,” Nat said.

Natalie went on to say that when her marriage breakdown was made public this year, she called her ex in “hysterics” because she was terrified she might be outed.

“He said, ‘It’s okay. This is your truth and you now have to sit in it and stand in it and own it’,” she recalled.

“So to have that support from him has been nothing short of beautiful, and I’m very grateful for it.

“Now I can speak from my own mouth, on my own truth, and that feels rewarding.”

Natalie and her ex-husband share two children, Harper and Hendrix.
