When talking about the moves the Detroit Lions need to make this offseason, their defense has been getting most of the attention.

However, there are some needs on the offensive side of the ball that have flown a bit under the radar.

One of those needs could come at the wide receiver position and now a player with six 1000-yard receiving seasons has been brought up as a potential option for the Lions.

The Detroit News’ Richard Silva named Dallas Cowboys receiver Brandin Cooks as a player the Lions should pursue during the 2025 NFL offseason.

Cooks has posted at least 550 yards in each of his previous 10 seasons prior to 2024, and he was a 1,000-yard receiver as recently as 2021. His days of elite play are behind him, but he’s been a consistent, reliable receiver across his stints with five different teams. An added bonus: Lions offensive coordinator John Morton was Cooks’ receivers coach with the Saints from 2015-16.

Cooks is coming off of by far the worst season of his career even when considering the fact he was only able to play 10 games because of injury.

In 2024, Cooks averaged the least receptions per game of his career at just 2.6. His 25.9 yards per game were also a career worst and were 14 less than any other season in his career.

It’s part of a troubling trend for Cooks. He has seen his yards per game decrease by at least 10 yards from the previous year in each of the past four seasons.

Whether or not Cooks could be a fit for the Lions will really depend on the price.

Tim Patrick is set to hit free agency and Josh Reynolds is a cut candidate for this offseason. That could leave the team without a WR3.

Lions Urged to Pursue $39.8 Million Receiver

It’s not a position that will be seen as a huge priority as the team has plenty of other pass catching talent with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Patrick also only made 33 catches for 394 yards in this role during the 2024 season.

If the Lions can get him cheaply, then he would be worth it to add a veteran with a long history of dependable play before the 2024 season. Otherwise, the team should look for more of a bargain option as potentially the fifth target in their passing game.
