Whether you’ve bought a place yourself, tagged along to inspections with your family and friends, or simply scrolled through properties online, you’d know how daunting the home-buying process can be. Not only is it increasingly difficult to break into the market with the current cost-of-living crisis, but finding the perfect property that ticks all of your boxes (as well as your partner’s) can feel just as tough.
No show captures the highs and lows of home buying more than Channel 10’s new series House Hunters Australia, which is narrated by The Project host Georgie Gardner. Each episode follows an Aussie couple as they tour three homes, debate over the pros and cons, and ultimately make their decision.
“It’s the perfect time for a series like this to come out because it is voyeuristic, but it’s still very real. It is happening for so many of us at the moment,” Georgie tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
Not only is Georgie excited for viewers to tune into House Hunters Australia as its narrator, but she also admits to being a longtime fan of the popular series. The TV show first aired in the US in 1999 and has since produced over 2,400 episodes and over 20 spin-offs.
“I used to watch this show with my family when I was growing up, I used to watch it when I moved out of home and I was living with my flatmate, and I would force Rob [Mills] to watch it as well and now he’s fall in love with it too,” she remarks.
“I have been such a fan of House Hunters for years, so when the opportunity came up for there to be an Australian series, I was just excited that I might be able to watch it. And now being involved and narrating it, it’s a pinch-me moment.”

Top tips for home buyers
In addition to narrating House Hunters Australia, Georgie is very familiar with the chaos of buying a home after recently going through the process with her fiancé, Rob Mills – who she recently competed alongside on the upcoming season of The Amazing Race Australia.
The couple attended a blur of inspections, clashed over design tastes and argued over budget, and she now has plenty of advice to share with people on the same journey.
“Number one, try and retain your stamina. It’s really easy to lose hope, especially, you go to an inspection, you make all the effort, and you know within a second that you walk through the door and you’re like, ‘This isn’t what we’re after’. That can be really disheartening, so don’t lose hope,” she says.
“And number two, if you are considering a fixer-upper at the moment, really think about it. Think about whether you’re going to have the funds for renovation. Building costs have skyrocketed; everything is triple the cost of what it would be a couple of years ago, and I don’t see that coming down anytime soon.
“So think about whether or not you actually want to put in the time, money and energy into a renovation, or if maybe you need to have some compromise and a turnkey could be for you.”
House Hunters Australia premieres Sunday, May 11 at 8:15pm and continues Fridays at 7:30pm on 10 and 10 Play.
