And Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan, and George Calombaris are reportedly game…

The original MasterChef judges – Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan, and George Calombaris – may be reuniting!

According to news.com.au, executives at the ABC want Matt, Gary, and George to star in a new culinary program.

And sources say the three OG MasterChef judges are game, hoping the yet-to-be-greenlit show relaunches their prime time television careers.

What happened to the original MasterChef Australia judges?

The primary reason why Matt, Gary, and George left MasterChef after Season 11 was an unsuccessful contract negotiation.

On March 26, 2019, Paul Anderson – who was CEO of Network 10 at the time – released a statement that read:

“Despite months of negotiation, 10 has not been able to reach a commercial agreement that was satisfactory to Matt, Gary, and George.”

Hours later, Matt, Gary and George all took to Instagram to post statements of their own.

“We were really keen to continue but we were unable to agree to all terms for the new contract,” Matt said in his statement.

“We were close to signing a new contract for Season 12 however the dates just didn’t align,” George said in his.

“It was time to move on, have more free time to explore our own creativity. It was never about the money and never will be about the money. We couldn’t agree on the terms of the new contract for 2020 and Season 12,” Gary said in his statement.

Of course, another factor that could’ve been at play (nothing’s ever been confirmed), is that at the time multiple hospitality unions were demanding that Network 10 fire George – his restaurant group was fined for underpaying 515 workers a total of $7.83 million.

What do Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan, and George Calombaris do now?

Since leaving MasterChef, Matt continued his work as a food critic and writer. He was also a judge on My Kitchen Rules in 2022.

Gary co-hosted Plate of Origin in 2020, and was a guest judge on My Kitchen Rules in 2022.

And George co-hosted Hungry in 2022, and joined Public Hospitality Group as a culinary director in 2023.

As aforementioned, the ABC is currently looking at developing a new cooking show with Matt, Gary, and George.
