Dancing With The Stars viewers were left devastated watching Sunday night’s episode when Harry Garside was eliminated in the semi-finals. Although the Olympic boxer didn’t receive the lowest score from the judges, the combined votes from the in-studio audience sent him home over 7NEWS presenter Michael Usher.

Harry tells Yahoo Lifestyle that while he was “heartbroken” not to have made it to the grand finale, he was especially devastated he didn’t get to perform his final routine. He and his partner Siobhan Power had prepared a freestyle performance to Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’, which he reveals was inspired by his dad.

“It was going to be something really special. It was going to be this beautiful re-enactment of a memory that I got with my dad, where we used to play the song on the way home when I was like, I don’t know, maybe seven or eight,” he explains.

“Our house was at the bottom of a hill, and he would stop the car on the top of the hill and we’d sing it at the top of our lungs, loud and proud while driving down the hill. We were going to try and recreate that as best we could in the dance.”

Harry adds that he would’ve loved to have performed it with his dad in the audience; however, it might not have been his best because he was “falling so far behind” in rehearsals.

“We had some Pasodoble in there, which is quite intense, we had some contemporary lifts, we had so many cool things in it. But we only had, I want to say, three or four days to try and master it,” he details. “The way my brain works, I don’t know it’s because of boxing and brain damage, maybe, but it takes me a long time to pick things up.”

With the grand finale fast approaching, Harry shares that he would love to see Brittany Hockley or Trent Cotchin win the competition after growing so close with them throughout filming.

“I think they danced amazingly, and they definitely grew as the season went on,” he says. “Everyone was very friendly and supportive, because it is quite terrifying. Most of us aren’t dancers, we’ve had no dance experience before, and we’re all just as nervous as each other. So to get out there and do it, it was really cool.”

He adds that he and Shaun Micallef also formed an unlikely friendship behind the scenes, and he would love to see him take home the mirrorball trophy because he’s “so captivating”.

“I had some deep and meaningful discussions with Shaun, which was amazing. I learned a lot from him,” he remarks. “He’s obviously a lot older than I am, and he’s been in the industry for so long, and he’s so observant, I think all comedians are. I just loved having some conversations with him.”
