The Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending situation has once again become a focal point of controversy and frustration following another disappointing playoff exit. With Stuart Skinner under intense scrutiny for his inconsistent performances and much of the blame for the team’s postseason struggles falling squarely on his shoulders, questions about the Oilers’ decision-making in net have reached a fever pitch.

General Manager Stan Bowman’s recent comments have only fueled speculation about the future of the position, as he both defended his current goaltenders and hinted at possible changes ahead. As fans and analysts alike debate what went wrong and what needs to change, the uncertainty surrounding Edmonton’s crease promises to be one of the most closely watched storylines heading into the offseason.

Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman has faced plenty of concerns this season from fans of their own as to why a true number-one goaltender was never acquired, due to Stuart Skinner’s inconsistency.

Calvin Pickard has shown more promise than their ‘number one’.

Skinner is facing a majority of the blame for their playoffs struggles, including their Game 6 loss on Tuesday, which led to the Florida Panthers winning the Stanley Cup.

While all the blame can’t be dumped on one individual, Bowman stands by his goaltender.

Stan Bowman reveals why the Oilers never acquired a goaltender

During an interview with The Athletic, Bowman revealed the team’s great confidence in Skinner to guide them to success.

I mean, you talk to the players and you talk to the coaches, they have a lot of confidence in these guys. At the end of the day, the players decide this, right? It’s the guys that are on the ice, and they have confidence in the guys we have, both in Pickard and Skinner. I think when you have a belief from your team that they’re going to get the job done for you, then you don’t have to focus on that exclusively.

Clearly he may want to reconsider his trust, as goaltender has continued to be a flaw for Edmonton as they are on the hunt to win the Stanley Cup.

Bowman drop a hint that may suggest the Oilers will look to acquire a goaltender this upcoming offseason, as he was unable to find a number-one goaltender on the market at the NHL trade deadline.

It’s very important, but on the other hand, it’s not like there’s 30 No. 1 goalies in the world. There’s a handful, and then there’s other guys who can do the job you need them to do.

John Gibson was linked to the Oilers this offseason, but a move was never made due to uncertainty on Edmontons side. Perhaps they will reconsider this offseason.
