When it comes to The Block, one of the biggest words on Scott Cam’s lips this year is ‘budget’ and for good reason.
This year, there is an additional $10,000 up for grabs each week, thanks to CommBank, for the team who manages their money the best.
So it’s not just Room Reveals that will score you some extra (and much-needed) weekly cash.
Throw in three potential 10s from the judges and that’s up to $50,000 in prize money up for grabs each week!
Safe to say, it’s never been more important and enticing for teams to keep on top of their finances.
Here’s how they’re tracking so far:
House 4 take out the best budget title again! (Nine)
Week 2 – Kids’ Bedrooms
House 4: Sonny and Alicia
Suggested budget: $15,000
Total amount spent: $14,970
Money won: $10,000
Being the only team to come under budget again, House 4’s Sonny and Alicia have earned the title of The Block‘s Budget King and Queen.
They won a neat $10,000 thanks to CommBank for keeping on top of their finances (for the second week in a row).
House 2: Han and Can
Suggested budget: $15,000
Total amount spent: $15,477
Money won: $10,000 + Bonus Point Gnome and David Bromley artwork
With a recommended budget of $15,000, Han and Can stuck mostly to it with a total spend of $15,477.
Han and Can have done it again! (Nine)
Earlier this week the girls managed to secure their first win – a challenge win that saw them take home $10,000, a Bromley artwork and a Bonus Point Gnome.
They did not however play their Bonus Point Gnome on Sunday night.
House 3: Britt and Taz
Suggested budget: $15,000
Total amount spent: $16,970
Money won: $10,000 + $175,000 worth of kitchen appliances thanks to E&S
Britt and Taz completed their two kids’ bedrooms just slightly above budget.
They also won the most this week! As winners, they took home $10,000 cash. Thanks to E&S, this week’s room winners also secured a full sweep of appliances worth around $175,000.
Britt and Taz score their first win! (Nine)
House 1: Emma and Ben
Suggested budget: $15,000
Total amount spent: $17,554
Money won: $0
Emma and Ben scored second in Room Reveals this week, and second last when it came to managing their budget.
Let’s hope they can learn for next week!
House 5: Robby and Mat
Suggested budget: $15,000
Total amount spent: $24,432
Money won: $0
Robby and Mat proved themselves to be big spenders once again! They spent the most on their rooms for a second week in a row.
They spent nearly $10,000 more than the recommended budget. With a secret wine cellar to build, let’s hope they reign in their spending soon!
Week 1 – Main Bathroom
This week, teams were given a suggested budget of $20,000 to spend on their main bathrooms.
Not everyone was able to stick to the $20k recommended budget. (Nine)
With a slew of unexpected costs thrown their way (blame the Mastik glue!), was it a budget the teams could stick to?
DAN VS DANI EXCLUSIVE: Couple brand one duo’s bathroom feature the ‘uglies thing I’ve seen’
House 4: Sonny and Alicia
Suggested budget: $20,000
Total amount spent: $14,739
Money won: $10,000
Sonny and Alicia may not have won the Room Reveal but they were winners when it came to budget! (Nine)
The Victorian couple spent the least amount on their bathroom this week, impressively more than $5,000 under budget.
The team saved major time and costs by painting the walls outside the wet area in their bathroom, as opposed to using tiles.
While they didn’t score a win during Room Reveals their tight budgeting won them $10,000 thanks CommBank.
House 2: Han and Can
Suggested budget: $20,000
Total amount spent: $19,711
Money won: $0
Han and Can were the only other team to stay under budget this week – and just made the cut.
‘Handy Han’ was determined to do as much labour as possible to cut costs on trades, but the real cost came when they presented an unfinished room.
Handy Han did as much labour as possible to save on costs. (Nine)
Yet there were so close! Would an extra tiler have helped them cross the finish line?
House 3: Britt and Taz
Suggested budget: $20,000
Total amount spent: $21,350
Money won: $0
The Western Australia couple were only slightly over budget this week.
Like House 4, Britt and Taz had to re-tile their entire bathroom after making the costly mistake of using the wrong glue.
Unlike House, they didn’t have much wiggle room left in their budget.
House 1: Emma and Ben
Suggested budget: $20,000
Total amount spent: $22,552
Money won: $0
Emma and Ben made a splash with their bathroom this week, hoping their featured curved nib wall would score them extra points.
Unfortunately, the time and effort taken to perfectly execute their grand vision didn’t pay off.
Emma and Ben were middle of the road when it came to budgeting. (Nine)
The craftmanship in judge Marty Fox’s eyes was not on par with a 10 out of 10 room.
House 5: Robby and Mat
Suggested budget: $20,000
Total amount spent: $25,394
Money won: $10,000
Best mates Robby and Mat spent the most this week, an impressive $5,394 above budget. But it seems to have paid off!
Looks like splashing the extra cash paid off for the boys. (Nine)
Splashing out on all the right details and use of trades, the duo delivered a winning bathroom in the judges’ eyes.
That extra $10,000 would be going straight to their secret weapon, their game-changing underground wine cellar.
