Following months of anticipation, Robert Irwin finally hit the dance floor as a contestant on the US version of Dancing With The Stars last night. The 21-year-old Wildlife Warrior delivered the final performance of the night, performing a jive routine to Steppenwolf’s ‘Born to be Wild’ alongside his partner Witney Carson.

Robert topped the leaderboard with a score of 15/20, tying with The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Whitney Leavitt, and judge Julianne Hough declared that it was “the best first dance” she had ever seen on the show. Interestingly, Robert’s performance featured many subtle references to his sister Bindi Irwin’s stint on Dancing With The Stars 10 years ago.

Not only did the eldest Irwin sibling perform a jive for her first dance with her partner Derek Hough, but they also had a very similar routine. Both siblings began their performance wearing their signature khaki uniforms before their partners helped them strip off into a sequinned green outfit.

Bindi also landed at the top of the leaderboard after night one and went on to win the competition.

Terri Irwin, Bindi, her husband Chandler and their daughter Grace were notably in the audience for Robert’s first performance, with Bindi taking to Instagram to share a gallery of snaps with her family backstage.

“Such a surreal feeling to be here with my family 10 years later. So excited to cheer on my brother and his incredible partner, Witney,” she wrote.

Robert recently told The Hollywood Reporter that it was “full circle” appearing on Dancing With The Stars after supporting his sister a decade ago.

“I don’t expect to do half the job she did,” he said. “But it was like a little childhood dream that I’ve had for 10 years. It feels pretty wild that I’m finally fulfilling it.”

“You watch him take it, too!” she remarked. “Dancing, it’s really difficult, but way to get conservation out there.”
