Fans of Chris Hemsworth have been brought to tears after the actor shared a look at his new documentary for National Geographic titled Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember. The Thor actor shared in the trailer that his father has been diagnosed with “early-stage Alzheimer’s”, making the project a special one for him.

Chris shared that the documentary would show him and his father on a “road trip back in time”, hoping that by revisiting key places from their past, he could help his Dad keep his memories. National Geographic said of the documentary: “This emotional journey across Australia becomes a chance for Chris and Craig to deepen their bond, relive memories, and discover how love, community and nostalgia can be potent medicine.”

The trailer begins with Chris holding up an old photo of himself and his dad, with the actor becoming emotional as he said, “This is a photo of me and my Dad, and…”

Unable to complete his sentence, Chris recovered and said, “I love this photo.”

He is then heard as a voiceover, where he explains, “My Dad and I are going on a road trip, back into our past.”

“He has early-stage Alzheimer’s,” Chris adds, clearly feeling emotional by the admission.

“I want to do everything that I can to help him.

“Turns out, this experience could help fight the disease,” he added.

Scenes from the documentary are interspersed with old photos of the father, son, and the rest of their family.

The photos of Craig as a young man show that there is a striking resemblance between him and his sons, Chris, Luke and Liam, all of whom are actors.

The father and son are seen at one point in what appears to be a replica of Chris’ childhood house, with Craig telling him it feels “like home”.

“Different places instantly bring those memories to life,” Chris continued in the voiceover.

“I just find myself wanting to spend more time with him.”

In one emotionally charged moment from the documentary, Chris asked his dad what he was “afraid of”, with the trailer cutting to another moment before we can hear Craig’s response.

Chris noted that the documentary was “about connection”.

“My Dad and I had always spoken about taking a trip back to the Northern Territory, where our family had lived years ago, but we had never been able to set aside the time to actually do it,” Chris wrote on Instagram alongside the trailer.

“More recently, the idea of taking that road trip reemerged with more pressing importance.

“The result was a more profound, more moving, and more surprising journey than I ever anticipated.”

Fans were left feeling very emotional after watching the trailer, with one person commenting, “I wasn’t expecting to start crying listening to your beautiful story of you and your dad.”

“Enjoy your dad. Every precious moment,” another wrote. “Dementia is the cruellest disease that takes the person you love and changes them slowly and painfully.

“Treasure times with him whilst you can.”

“Gosh this is beautiful,” a third said. “I wish my dad was still around so we could share a moment like this.”

Many others were stunned at how similar Craig looks to his sons.

“OMG! You are your dad’s clone,” one person wrote, while another added, “Wow the resemblance is crazy.”

“Strong genetics in this family!” a third agreed.

It comes after Chris discovered in 2022 that he has a genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s while filming his health and wellness series Limitless.

In the series, the actor explored how to “combat ageing” and push himself to the limit, both physically and mentally.

“We’ve got every blood test one can get,” Dr Peter Attia, a longevity physician, said in one episode.

“And you’ve got two copies of APOE4. A set from your mum and a set from your dad.”

According to the National Institute on Aging, only two to three per cent of people carry two copies of this gene, which is ‘the strongest risk factor gene for Alzheimer’s disease’.

The actor is eight to 10 times more likely to develop the disease than the average person, and he made a heartbreaking admission on the show.

“The idea that I won’t be able to remember the life I experienced, or my wife, my kids, is probably my biggest fear,” he said.

The doctor assured Chris that the discovery doesn’t mean he will definitely get Alzheimer’s, adding, “It’s my belief that if we take every step possible, we can reduce your risk to that of anyone else.”

Later in the episode, the Extraction star shared that the health news wasn’t entirely unexpected because his grandfather suffers from Alzheimer’s.

The Aussie star later said the unsettling health news has made him reassess his priorities.

“It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off,” he told Vanity Fair in late 2022.

“And since we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do.”

He said that once he completed his current projects, he would take time off and “just simplify” his life and spend time with his family.

This did not mean that he would give up acting, however, the star has since appeared in several projects, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Extraction 2, to name just a few.

Craig previously worked as a social services counsellor in child protection services.

In 2015, Chris achieved a long-held goal: helping his parents pay off their debt.

“We grew up with no money, very broke,” he told El Pais. “I thought I could make some money here and get my parents out of debt and pay for the house and help friends and family.”

Liam, the youngest Hemsworth brother, reportedly teared up when recounting the heartfelt moment Chris called Craig and told him to check his bank account.

“He [his father] called my brother Chris back and said: ‘I don’t know how to feel’,” Liam told The Independent in 2015.

“‘Since I left home I have had debts and I thought I’d be paying them off until I died and have this weight hanging over me, and now to have them completely cleared’.”

“They are so happy now and able to spend more time with us, I would love to be able to do something for my parents like that.”
