Ghosts is the brainchild of the team behind Horrible Histories
Netflix is currently streaming a comedy series inspired by a beloved BBC show, and it’s quickly climbing the ranks on the streaming giant’s global charts as viewers can’t get enough. At the time of writing, the series has cracked the top 10 most-watched shows worldwide after Netflix made it accessible in two dozen regions.
As per Flix Patrol, CBS comedy Ghosts is among the top 10 shows in 212 countries. Ghosts originated as a BBC sitcom from the creators of Horrible Histories and Yonderland, first gracing screens in 2019.
The series enjoyed a five-season run from 2019 to 2023, culminating in a festive special. Ghosts chronicles the lives of couple Alison Cooper (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike Cooper (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), who inherit a sprawling, rundown mansion they plan to transform into a bustling bed and breakfast.
Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar star in Ghosts US
Unbeknownst to them, the vast property is haunted by a myriad of ghosts – former inhabitants who met their end there over the centuries. Following an incident, Alison begins to see and interact with the spectral residents as they attempt to coexist in their shared abode.
Other cast members in the British version include Lolly Adefope, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, Ben Willbond, and Katy Wix.
American network CBS expressed interest in creating a US adaptation of the sitcom, which was announced in 2019 before the inaugural season premiered stateside in 2021, reports Surrey Live.
The American version of Ghosts features iZombie’s Rose McIver as Samantha ‘Sam’ Arondekar, taking on the role equivalent to Alison, while Utkarsh Ambudkar from Never Have I Ever plays Jayanth ‘Jay’ Arondekar, stepping into Mike’s shoes.
Ghosts US has been a hit on Netflix
Much like its British counterpart, Ghosts US boasts a large ensemble cast that includes Devan Chandler Long, Brandon Scott Jones, Rebecca Wisocky, Danielle Pinnock, Sheila Carrasco, Richie Moriarty, and Asher Grodman.
Despite the original Ghosts series concluding, there’s no indication that the US adaptation is slowing down. The original Ghosts series comprises 34 episodes, but the American version has already aired four seasons with a total of 50 episodes, thus outpacing its predecessor much like The Office US did with Ricky Gervais’ original series.
Ghosts US enjoys a 97 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, slightly edging out the British edition’s 96 percent freshness score on the ratings aggregator. Ghosts US is currently available for free viewing on BBC iPlayer in the UK, alongside its British equivalent.
