The Golden Bachelor host Samantha Armytage has finally addressed rumours about her future on Channel 9 following speculation that she will be returning to breakfast TV. Reports emerged this week that the TV presenter, who hosted Sunrise from 2013 to 2021, is in ‘secret talks’ with the network to replace Sarah Abo as host of Today alongside Karl Stefanovic.

While Samantha has so far remained tight-lipped about the potential move, she asserted to Yahoo Lifestyle on Friday that she is “very happy” to be working primetime hours after years with an early morning alarm. She added that she doesn’t typically comment on rumours, but “life is good”.

“Look, I’m under contract at Nine, and this is my first role at Nine, and it’s really lovely for me to have a show that is mine, that is new to Australia, and is just 100 per cent mine,” she remarked.

“So I love that, and I’m also very happy in prime time. I think this is really a nice move in my career, and a nice place for me to land, so I’m thrilled with how everything’s going.”

She went on to say that her main priority right now is to launch The Golden Bachelor, which she is hoping could have “one ounce of the success of MAFS”.

“It’s sort of like a baby; let’s just introduce this to the world,” she said with a laugh. “I’ve been nurturing this baby for a few months now, and so now I get to introduce it, and I think we just enjoy that.”

How Samantha feels about rumours

Samantha’s move to Today is one of many rumours swirling about her in recent weeks, including that she is now dating The Golden Bachelor star Barry ‘Bear’ Myrden.

The journalist admitted she’s well aware that rumours are a part of “this game that we all play in the media”, but she doesn’t ever give them much thought.

“I roll my eyes, and mostly, I just laugh. I mean, I’ve been around 25 years in TV, so you have to laugh,” she said.

“I mean, the Bear rumours I just find absolutely hilarious. Can you imagine? Plot twist: ‘Armytage runs off with the Bachelor’. No, I did not do that.

“Every time I stand next to a man, they say I’m dating him. I take a friend of mine to the races who’s gay, and they say we’re dating. It’s like, no, we’re not! So it’s funny, it’s actually funny.”

Samantha’s brief stint on Today

This comes shortly after Samantha confessed on the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About that it was “a little weird” hosting Today over the summer break alongside weather presenter Dan Anstey while Karl and Sarah were on leave.

“Obviously, studios are different, people are different, the way that Sunrise and the Today show write their scripts, all the little details that you become used to when you host a show every day,” she detailed.

“It was fun. The alarm did not bother me because it was only [for] a few weeks, so that’s easy. It’s when it’s every day that it gets you.”

She added that she had “so much fun” leading Sunrise for more than eight years, and it was “very flattering” that Channel 9 trusted her to fill in on Today.
