Monday’s episode of The Block brought more grief for House Five’s Robby and Mat.
After losing Backyard Week to Emma and Ben on Sunday, the boys from Adelaide learned they were $34,000 over budget on their landscaping.
The cost blowout came as a total surprise to the pair and now puts completion of their front yard at risk as the teams head into the final week of the competition.
‘We wanted to go out with a bang, but unfortunately, we’re going out with a sparkler,’ a blindsided Robby said on the couch after learning the devastating news.
‘There’s $34,000 of unforeseen costs on [the landscaper’s] end that he has put on to us,’ explained an emotional Mat, who added: ‘I’m ready to kill someone.’
To make matters worse, Mat said that the shock came when the pair found out that the tradie was 50 per cent over his budget allocation.

Surveying the site later, the pair revealed their original budget for the landscaping was $70,000.
‘[The tradie] has now increased the budget to $105,000 without any communication, and he said it was from unforeseen engineering,’ Mat said.
‘But at no stage was that communicated to us until after we completed.’
Robby added: ‘Pardon my French, but we’re f***ed.’
The pair suffered more frustration during the episode as they took a tour of Ben and Emma’s house, including their controversial wine cellar.
The husband and wife team drew rave reviews from the judges for the room after a scandal had rocked the Daylesford site earlier this season over claims that Ben and Emma were ‘copycatting’ Mat and Robby’s own wine cellar.
And Mat did not hold back in his verdict as he surveyed their work.
‘I can’t help but feel they copied us with that,’ he said, pointing to a detail in the design, and adding: ‘They did with the whole room.’

Elsewhere in the episode, the best friends had a chance to make some quick cash when host Scott Cam announced there was a chance to win $10,000 in a new challenge.
Scott said that the Blockheads had to build a ‘biscuit tower’ with the team constructing the tallest tower announced as the winner.
And just when Mat and Robby looked like they had the contest in the bag, it was Ben and Emma who finally took home the cash.
It comes after a drama-filled Backyard Week that saw the husband and wife team from Victoria pull a fast move ahead of the final score tally.
Just as Scott was about to add the points for each team, Ben produced a $100 bill with a secret gnome, giving House One a bonus point.
Predictably, the other Blockheads were unhappy about Ben and Emma’s strategy.
‘You lied to our faces,’ Alicia said, after the couple had managed to keep their gnome a secret.
In the end, Emma and Ben won Backyard Week by half a point, with their final score at 38.5.
Robby and Matt came second with 38 points, while Britt and Taz weren’t far behind on 37.75.
Han and Can, who have struggled with money issues for weeks, managed 31.5 points and walked away with the CommBank budget award of $10,000 after completing their backyard against all the odds.
