NEW CLUES in Lilly & Jack Sullivan search? SAR lead interview: The toll taken one month later ![]()
It is Sunday morning, the 1st of June. Can you believe that we’re almost halfway through 2025? It doesn’t seem like two minutes since it was New Year’s Day. Time flies.
Okay, continuing the coverage of the search for six-year-old Lily and four-year-old Jack Sullivan from Lanstown Station in Nova Scotia.
In my last video on this case, I did a short update to report that there was a surprise search — seemingly out of the blue. The news was that there were going to be new searches in the area of Gerlock Road yesterday, i.e., Saturday.
This came just days after the RCMP said they had no more searches planned, and also just a very short time — between 24 and 48 hours — after the RCMP issued a request to the public for dash cam footage of Gerlock Road between noon on April 28th and noon on May 2nd.
Those following the case know that the children were reported missing around 10:00 a.m. by their mother on May 2nd. RCMP also reported this week that the children were seen — they can confirm the children were seen in public on the afternoon of Thursday, May 1st.
So that put to bed any speculation that Lily and Jack went missing days before they were reported missing. That’s a lot of theories put to rest, which I’m thankful for.
So, let’s talk about the latest search. Why have they gone out there again?
Well, there’s been an interview with the lead search and rescue person, Amy Hansen. So, let’s go.
This was the update from the RCMP after the search yesterday — eight hours ago as I record this:
Ground search efforts were underway today and are planned for tomorrow (i.e., June 1st) in the area of Gerlock Road, as a missing persons investigation into the disappearance of Lily and Jack Sullivan continues.
More than 75 trained searchers from ground search and rescue organizations — including Colchester County, Pictou County, East Hants, Halifax, Strait Area, Springhill, and Pugwash — were engaged today in an effort to advance the ongoing investigation.
Searchers focused on specific areas around Gerlock Road and the nearby pipeline — the gas pipeline trail — where a boot print was previously located.
So, Amy Hansen talks about that. Hold that thought.
They also released some photos from the Truro and Colchester Code One — coverage of first responders doing their work.
In this video, you can see the Colchester Ground Search and Rescue Association’s thermal drone taking off just after 4:30 a.m. yesterday.
One GSR member said they had to remove more than a dozen black-legged ticks throughout the day. Please take care of yourselves. Thank you all for your hard work.
Now, here’s the interview with Amy Hansen, reported by CBC.
Searchers looking for the two missing kids in Pictou County on Saturday scoured the area where a boot print had been found in a previous search.
I believe the boot print was found the day after the children went missing. They had a dog there, but didn’t get a scent — which raises questions as to whether this boot print has anything to do with Lily and Jack.
Searchers admit they have little to go on and no way of knowing if the boot print is even related.
There has been loads of speculation as to why these surprise searches happened this weekend, days after the RCMP said they had no more planned. Maybe a new tip came in? Maybe a new lead after reviewing surveillance footage?
But if the RCMP have new leads, they don’t appear to have been communicated to the search and rescue teams on the ground.
Amy Hansen, of Colchester Ground Search and Rescue, who is managing the search this weekend, said:
“We don’t know for sure if it was from the children, but it’s the only real thing we’ve had to go on thus far.”
Approximately 75 volunteers resumed the search on Saturday.
Lily and Jack went missing from their home in Lanstown Station just over four weeks ago. The area is about 140 km northeast of Halifax.
Hansen said there has been no new evidence since the search was suspended two weeks ago on May 17th.
So, I think the RCMP are appealing for dash cam footage because they don’t know what else to do at this point.
Maybe they’re hoping to catch someone who was patrolling or watching the area before the kids went missing. But honestly, I don’t think they have anything.
Is that pessimistic? Maybe. I go through days where I’m hopeful — like when Melissa Scott, a neighbor three miles away, said they asked for her trail cam footage from April 27th.
That made me think: do they suspect the kids went missing earlier? But we now know that’s not true — they were seen in public on May 1st.
So now it feels like they’re just widening the net.
Every theory they come up with comes to nothing. It’s demoralizing. No new evidence since the search was suspended.
They’ve focused on Landsdown Lake and the nearby pipeline trail.
RCMP divers searched the lake on May 8th and 9th — it’s not right next to their home, but it’s close enough that a 6- and 4-year-old could walk there.
Did something happen there? Did one fall in and the other try to help? But the divers found nothing.
The woods are full of brush and debris from past storms, making it hard to search. So far, crews have done a grid search of about 6 square kilometers. They expected to cover 1–2 more this weekend.
Here’s the area they’re focused on.
That’s their home, and Landsdown Lake is nearby. They’ve already searched much of the area close to the lake.
They’re focusing on a particular area where the boot print was found, which makes the search zone more of an egg shape than a perfect circle.
Could the kids have been trying to walk to school? The school is in Salt Springs. Maybe they were waiting for the bus, it didn’t come, and they tried to walk. Who knows?
It’s hard to think like a 6- or 4-year-old.
It’s the lack of scent that troubles me. No scent at all.
Three drones are helping the search, but helicopters haven’t been used due to poor weather.
We’re seeing fewer volunteers now. It’s emotionally and physically taxing.
Two weeks ago they had over 100 — now fewer.
On Friday, Daniel Martell, the children’s stepfather, told CBC:
“The last month has been painful for our family. Every day when I wake up, it feels like I’m reliving a nightmare.
The main feelings of sadness just turn to anger because there’s no evidence after one month.”
The search is expected to continue until Sunday evening unless something changes.
If Daniel’s innocent, he’s lost everything. There are rumors Malia left with her mother, possibly due to CPS involvement or mental health concerns.
Some say Daniel did most of the caregiving lately. Others speculate depression may have affected Malia.
Looking at her old Facebook posts, there were lots of happy pictures — but things seemed to slow down.
It’s possible she struggled. It’s possible Daniel tried to hold things together.
We have to consider everything, just like the RCMP is doing.
We can’t jump to conclusions. Because after a whole month, there is still nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
