In her season exit interview on Tuesday, Minnesota Lynx forward basketball player Napheesa Collier called WNBA leadership dismissive and tone deaf.

“The league has made it clear it isn’t about innovation. It isn’t about collaboration. It’s about control and power,” the former Husky star said.

Collier expressed frustration with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, citing a conversation the two had in February at an Unrivaled event.

“Her response was that Caitlin should be grateful that she makes $16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her she wouldn’t make anything,” Collier said.

Engelbert responded to Collier statements on Tuesday saying that she has the utmost respect for the player and is disheartened by how she characterized their conversations.

“I think there are growing concerns about the player’s safety, the culture withing locker rooms, how coaches are interacting with the players,” Quinnipiac University Assistant Professor of Sport and Entertainment Management Donald McAulay Jr. said. “One of the concerns is the game and how it’s controlled and played.”
