According to Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson, Boelter, 57, is now facing federal charges in the murders of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the attempted assassination of State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife.

Boelter posed as a cop. He wore a hyper-realistic silicone mask, black tactical gear, body armor. And even drove an SUV rigged with police lights and plates.
“Boelter stalked his victims like prey,” Thompson said.

Surveillance video reportedly showed Boelter knocking on Hoffman’s door, pretending to be law enforcement: “This is the police, open the door.”

Once inside, he flashed a blinding light, lied about a shooting at the home, and asked if there were any weapons inside.

But then the Hoffmans saw through him.
“You’re not a cop,” they shouted. “You’re not a police officer!”

That’s when, according to authorities, Boelter said “This is a robbery,” and pushed his way inside. He shot Hoffman multiple times, then turned and fired repeatedly at Hoffman’s wife.
