Jennifer Lopez has never been one to shy away from taking risks, and her latest project was no exception.

The Unstoppable star recently opened up about her deeply personal investment in her 2024 album This Is Me…
Now and its accompanying film, a project that cost her $20 million of her own money.
The endeavor was both a tribute to her decades-long, on-and-off relationship with Ben Affleck and an artistic expression of her personal journey.

Now, following her split from the Accountant actor, Lopez is sharing rare insight into the ambitious creative venture, which was both a labor of love and a significant financial gamble.

A Risky, Passion-Fueled Project

Lopez, 55, has long been known for putting her heart into her work, and This Is Me…Now was no exception. The project was a follow-up to her 2002 album This Is Me…Then, which was released during the peak of her first romance with Affleck. The sequel album, released in 2024, explored their rekindled love story and was accompanied by a high-concept musical film, This Is Me…Now: A Love Story.
The film, a surrealist fantasy loosely based on Lopez’s life, featured a star-studded cast, including Jane Fonda, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jenifer Lewis, Sofia Vergara, Post Malone, and Trevor Noah. Affleck also made a brief cameo in the film, despite his reputation for keeping his personal life private.
To bring her vision to life, Lopez personally financed the project, reportedly investing $20 million of her own resources. In an industry where studio backing is often crucial, Lopez took a bold leap of faith, driven by her passion and belief in the story she wanted to tell.

Mixed Reactions and Financial Fallout
Despite its personal significance, This Is Me…Now faced a mixed reception. The film received generally positive reviews, earning a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and praise for its ambition and production design. However, it also faced criticism, with some calling it overly commercialized and self-indulgent.
The album itself, while earning a 61 out of 100 on Metacritic, struggled commercially. It sold just 14,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number 38 on the Billboard 200, making it Lopez’s first studio album to miss the top 20. By comparison, her previous album, A.K.A., released in 2014, debuted at number eight.

Lopez’s Personal Reflection
Looking back on the project, Lopez stands by her decision, even as she acknowledges the challenges. Speaking to Variety, she described herself as a hopeless romantic, both in life and in her artistic work.
“I’ve been on this journey, and I’ve been trying to figure it out,” she said, reflecting on her creative and personal evolution.
At the time of the film’s release, Lopez was still married to Affleck and saw the project as a defining moment in their rekindled relationship. “Now I feel like because Ben and I have rediscovered each other — and now that we’re married — I have something to offer. This is the defining piece of work that’s going to close that chapter so I can move on to the next part of my life.”

However, as the couple’s marriage unraveled, Lopez was left to navigate the emotional and financial implications of her decision.
Affleck’s Support Despite Private Nature
Though Affleck, 52, is notoriously private when it comes to his personal life, Lopez revealed that he ultimately supported her decision to create the film, despite initial reservations.
“He said, ‘You made a movie. For you. You made a great movie. You did it,’” Lopez recalled. His words of encouragement meant the world to her, even as the project faced commercial struggles. “Honestly, I don’t care what happens now. That is the biggest kind of compliment that I could get.”

The Aftermath of Their Split
Lopez and Affleck officially finalized their divorce at the beginning of 2025, marking the end of their highly publicized second attempt at marriage. Their relationship, which first began in the early 2000s before ending in a called-off engagement, reignited in 2021, leading to their wedding in 2022. However, their rekindled romance ultimately proved short-lived.
The end of their marriage also led to changes in Lopez’s professional plans. A tour that was initially scheduled in support of This Is Me…Now was canceled, with the singer citing a desire to “be with family” as the reason.
Moving Forward

Despite the financial losses and the personal heartbreak, Lopez remains steadfast in her belief that This Is Me…Now was a necessary creative endeavor. The album and film were not just about her relationship with Affleck but about her journey toward self-discovery.
Now, as she moves forward, Lopez appears focused on the next phase of her career and personal life. While her romance with Affleck has come to an end, the impact of their love story—both the highs and the lows—will undoubtedly remain a defining part of her artistic legacy.
