More than one month ago, Minnesota couple Jane Korpela and Daniel Latterell were reported missing after last being seen at a gas station. Now, police have found a body believed to be Korpela’s while Latterell remains missing.
According to a press release issued on July 1 by the Cloquet Police Department (CPD), police received notification from the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office on June 29 that they had made a significant break in the case. The SUV belonging to Latterell, a 2010 gray Ford Escape with a Minnesota license plate, was found earlier that day in a remote “farming and wooded” area about two miles north of the city of Aitkin.
“Near the vehicle, investigators recovered a deceased individual,” police said.
The body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office. Following a preliminary examination, authorities believe the body is that of Korpela, 62, per the release.

On June 30, CPD personnel assisted search teams in the area to locate Korpela’s 64-year-old boyfriend Latterell. K-9 teams, ground search crews and drones were deployed to the scene.
During the search, items of clothing belonging to Latterell were discovered, according to police. “However, he has not yet been located. Search efforts are ongoing,” the release states.
The CPD is asking anyone with information about Latterell’s whereabouts to contact the department at 218-879-1247.
PEOPLE reached out to both the Cloquet Police Department and Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office for more information on the case.
Korpela and Latterell were first reported missing on May 28 after last being seen together at a gas station near McGregor, Minn., on May 26. According to a June 3 release from the CPD, the couple’s friends and family last heard from them on May 25.

Police described the couple as “vulnerable missing adults,” and said there was “a concern for their mental health and safety.”
“At this time, we do not have any information suggesting foul play; however, both individuals may rely on medical services or medication,” the CPD said in the release.
According to a description provided by police, Latterell is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 200 lbs., and has hazel eyes.
