He was beaten only by Amber Davies who, like him, has experience of West End shows.

But while her displays on the BBC1 show quietly won high scores, his gained more attention.

In week one, Lewis leapt into a splits from the judges’ desk, jumping over the head of pro partner Katya Jones.

A viewer wrote on X: “How is Lewis Cope allowed on this show? Clearly a pro dancer. It’s unfair.” 9

Another remarked: “OK, Lewis Cope is stunning. But it was a full professional dance.”

Even fellow celebrity contestant La Voix had joked Lewis “tap danced in Billy Elliot. . . the only tap I know is in Screwfix. It’s terrible”.

Head judge Shirley Ballas criticised him on Saturday for being “too aggressive”, and gave him a mediocre six.

But that raised boos in the studio and a social media fightback.

One fan tweeted: “Lewis was amazing.”

Another said: “I don’t have a problem.
