Vernon Kay has admitted that his wife, Tess Daly, has “spent a fortune” fixing his botched DIY attempts around the house. During Monday morning’s BBC Radio 2 programme, just before launching into his own show, Vernon could be overheard having a conversation with his colleague, Scott Mills.

Scott had conducted an interview with American pop icon Taylor Swift on his Breakfast Show, and was left pondering what to do with the slice of sourdough bread that she’d given him, suggesting he might freeze it or mount it on a plaque as a keepsake.

Vernon (who recently discussed a live Strictly mishap that his other half had to deal with) suggested it would be better to simply consume the baked item, but Scott then asked him to identify the process used to preserve dead animals, with the former Family Fortunes presenter correctly answering taxidermy.

A curious Scott wondered whether bread could be preserved using the same technique. Vernon responded: “Hey, why don’t you just lacquer a slice?” Along similar lines, Scott disclosed that someone had also recommended using PVA glue to maintain the bread’s condition, though he acknowledged he’s “no DIY fan”.

Vernon suggested he attempt this approach, prompting Scott to enquire: “Will you do it for me?”, to which his colleague responded that he’d “give it a go”.

Taking things further, Scott seized the chance to see whether Vernon might also fix a couple of shelves for him, which led to a frank confession.

Vernon responded: “Oh, you do not want me around your place; trust me. Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Daly spent a fortune repairing what I’ve damaged.”

Scott observed that Vernon and Tess’ home renovation mishaps would be a show in itself, playfully suggesting that Sort Your Life Out host Stacey Solomon and husband Joe Swash, who have their own reality television programme, should “move over”. Vernon joked: “I wreck it, you fix it.”

It wouldn’t be the first occasion that Vernon has offered glimpses into his home improvement attempts. Recently, Vernon also disclosed that his endeavours frequently resulted in disastrous outcomes when he initially moved in with Tess.

Vernon, who married Tess at St Mary’s Church in Horwich in 2003, and with whom he shares daughters Phoebe and Amber, admitted that his mistakes also required the intervention of “someone else” to rectify them.

A radio listener had shared their own plans to complete a spot of plastering at home. Vernon noted that he tries his best, but they eventually end up calling someone to repair it, especially if it’s an electrical job.

He explained: “I’m not very good, I try, I like to think that I’m practical but it’s not really… the amount of times when we first moved in together, Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Daly and I, where I called my dad, ‘Dad just remind me, I know I ask you all the time, which one’s live?’”.

In a subsequent confession, Vernon revealed that his father would advise him to leave the wires “alone” and would then step in to tackle the issue himself.
