A 19-year-old university student tragically lost his life after being shot in the head at a house party when a bullet came through the floor.
The heartbreaking event unfolded on Friday, May 9, around 11pm local time, with 10 to 20 people gathered inside the home for the festivities. Paramedics were called to the scene and Connor Lotterman was taken to a nearby hospital. An obituary later confirmed that he passed away the following day, Saturday, May 10.
Local news outlets WOOD and FOX 17 reported that Connor, a Grand Valley State University student, suffered the fatal head injury at a residence in Tallmadge Township, Michigan, just west of Grand Rapids.

Officials from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) informed the media that although the shooting appears accidental, it is believed that someone on the second floor of the house fired several shots through the floor.
Detective Bureau Captain Jake Sparks from the OCSO expressed to FOX 17 that the act of shooting was “intentional”. He stated: “The shooting was quite intentional. Multiple rounds were fired.
“It wasn’t as if it were a one-shot accidental discharge. This was numerous rounds discharged. Although the result of the shooting led to an accidental death, this shooting was intentional,” reports the Mirror.
Prosecutors in Ottawa County are considering criminal charges against a 20 year old suspect, who has not been identified, in connection with the shooting. According to PEOPLE Magazine, police also confirmed that investigators believe alcohol played a role in the incident.
Grand Valley State University released a statement expressing their condolences: “The Grand Valley community is saddened by Connor’s tragic death. On behalf of President Mantella, the Laker community extends our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
Aaron Haight, GVSU Dean of Students, added: “Students may utilize the Care referral process and the University Counseling Center for support and resources during this difficult time. Faculty and staff can access mental health services via the Employee Assistance Program.”
The University released a statement
Sparks warned that the fatal incident serves as a reminder to gun owners to properly secure their weapons. He emphasised: “If you have firearms that are out, lock them away, separate them from the ammunition. Gun safes, trigger guards, trigger locks, all those things can be important to make sure nothing tragic happens.”
Individuals with information about the incident are urged to contact the OCSO or submit anonymous tips by calling 1.877.88.SILENT (745368).
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for Connor’s funeral expenses. The note on the page states: “Hey there! I wanted to share about a heartfelt effort to honour Connor Lotterman, who was taken from us far too soon.
“Every donation will help create a memorial bench for his family reminding us of his bright spirit, and possible other gifts to help Steve and Maria and their family, so if you can, please consider clicking the link below to donate or share it with others. Thank you for your support!”
