Up until recently, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla didn’t have the depth necessary to deal with the absence of a guard or forward. Whenever Boston has been short-handed in the backcourt or on the wing, Mazzulla has been forced to lean on a double-big rotation.

However, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens resolved that issue shortly after the Feb. 6 trade deadline by acquiring Torrey Craig via free agency.

Craig, 34, is capable of playing as a small forward or power forward. His presence allows Jaylen Brown to slide down into a two-guard role when necessary.

Now, if Mazzulla believes that running two bigs on the floor is detrimental to the Celtics’ chances of success due to a negative matchup, he has other avenues he can explore.

Positional versatility was key for the Celtics’ championship run last season. Both Oshae Brissett and Svi Mykhailiuk rarely featured; however, they could plug multiple spots in the rotation and provide valuable minutes when called upon. Craig will likely fill a similar role between now and the summer.

Opposing teams will be looking for ways to exploit any perceived weakness in the Celtics rotation. Before adding Craig, the Celtics lacked a genuine wing who could provide backup to Sam Hauser or allow Jayson Tatum and Brown to slide down a spot.

When the Celtics need to lean on wing depth, they finally have the option they’ve been missing since Brissett and Mykhailiuk left in the summer. That will be important moving forward.

Craig won’t help swing the championship race. He will, however, ensure that what was once the Celtics biggest weakness is now a position of strength.
