Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green has been a polarizing figure for much of his NBA career, but he recently landed in some hot water with fans after making an unfounded accusation about another player.
During an episode of his podcast, Green said that New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns missed Tuesday’s game against Golden State because he was avoiding former teammate Jimmy Butler.
Towns revealed that he missed the game in order to attend the funeral of a family friend. Many felt that Green’s insinuation was insensitive, especially since he commented on the matter without knowing what Towns was dealing with.
After the Warriors’ win over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, Green responded after learning more context about Towns’ absence from Tuesday’s game.
“Oh man. That’s unfortunate. I’m sorry to hear that. That sucks,” Green said after being informed on why Towns missed the game.
“But my comments that I made, was … ‘What I heard was this. That’s what I heard.’ So I do send my well wishes to him and his family… It’s inevitable. We all experience death in one way or another, and we’ll all experience it in the same way one day. So it’s unfortunate.”
Green also added that his podcast will “go on” despite the backlash from his comments on Towns, and for previous remarks about other teams and players.
“So I definitely wish them well and wish their family well. And I mean it. You know, we all go through that. And it’s never easy for anyone. But the Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis will go on.”

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, Towns missed the game to attend the funeral of Sarah Holtzman, who died after battling breast cancer.
Holtzman was close to Towns’ girlfriend Jordyn Woods, and the All-Star reflected on his experience prior to Thursday night’s game in Los Angeles.
“I want to say that all the losses I’ve had have taught me how to appreciate life and find joy in the work. Not many people have a chance to have this job and be able to play basketball for a living,” he said.
“And the problems that have arisen in my life and stuff, I know that if people were in my shoes they’d be extremely joyful to have the problems that I have. So just stay focused and it’s made me a better man.”
