The Dallas Mavericks shocked the sports world by sending All-NBA talent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster trade.

The Mavericks received Anthony Davis and a first-round pick for Doncic, but one prominent figure with ties to the team believes they could have received more.

“If the Mavs are going to trade Luka, that’s one thing, just get a better deal,” said Mark Cuban, former principal owner and now a minority owner of the Mavericks said.

“No disrespect to Anthony Davis…If we had gotten 4 Unprotected No. 1’s and Anthony Davis and Max Christie, this would be a different conversation.”

The aftermath of the trade can only described as a disaster for the Mavericks. Since trading Doncic, the Mavs have been hit by several significant injuries.

Kyrie Irving is out for the season with a torn ACL, and Davis only played one game in a Dallas uniform before being forced out indefinitely with an injury of his own.

Davis and Irving’s injuries are only compounded by other issues the team has faced, like injuries to big men Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively.

The Mavericks are currently in 10th in the Western Conference, holding the final play-in spot with only a small number of games left in the regular season.

Missing the play-in or the playoffs altogether would be a major step back for Dallas after making the NBA Finals last season.

They lost to then Boston Celtics in five games, but the trip appeared to be a sign to the franchise that Doncic could carry them where they needed to go in the playoffs.

With Doncic now out of the picture and multiple key starters out with long-term injuries, the Mavericks will need to rely on others to succeed in order to remain in hunt for the postseason.

In Los Angeles, Doncic has thrived in his new role with the Lakers. He and LeBron James have led the team to the No. 2 seed in the West, their highest point in the standings since winning the NBA title in 2020.

We’ll see what happens when it comes to the future for the Mavericks and the Lakers, but there’s no question that Dallas would have benefitted from waiting for more offers instead of taking the first one on the table for Doncic.
