Draymond Green is under fire for making baseless accusations about Karl-Anthony Towns.
On Tuesday, Towns missed the New York Knicks’ 114-102 loss to the Golden State Warriors due to personal reasons.
His girlfriend, Jordyn Woods, later revealed on Instagram that someone close to her died of breast cancer. Her mother, Elizabeth, said her best friend, Sarah, died. Towns appeared to post a photo of him and the deceased.
Before those posts, Green discussed Towns on his podcast recorded Wednesday night.
The Warriors star suggested that Towns avoided the game because he didn’t want to encounter former Minnesota Timberwolves teammate Jimmy Butler.
“That was a big game for us. And obviously they didn’t have K.A.T,” Green said. “Some would say he didn’t play because Jimmy was in the building. I don’t know.”
Green referenced an “infamous practice” in Minnesota before saying he “didn’t look that deep” into why Towns didn’t play.
Critics bashed Green’s boneheaded commentary on social media.
“This is just a reckless and inappropriate conversation from Draymond and Baron Davis,” the New York Post‘s Stefan Bondy said.
“Wouldn’t have been hard to do a little research or make a phone call before posting.”
“Green casually throwing this out there on his platform without researching the situation is extremely irresponsible,” SNY’s Ian Begley said.
“Absolutely reckless claim by Draymond,” Fireside Knicks wrote.
“If Draymond wants to call himself ‘new media’ all the time, he should issue a retraction and apologize,” SNY’s Rafael Canton said.

Although Green almost certainly hadn’t seen the explanation for Towns’ absence, “personal reasons” should have been enough to not attack a peer.
His accusation also doesn’t make sense, as Towns and Butler played each other when the Knicks defeated the Miami Heat on Oct. 30.
Even worse, Chris Broussard seemed to endorse Green’s accusations on Thursday afternoon’s First Things First.
The pundit claimed that “people think K.A.T. is soft” in a segment filmed after Towns and Woods mourned the loss of a loved one on social media.
