ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins is never one to shy away from a controversial opinion. But his latest take on a major event in the NBA has fans wondering if he’s alright in the head.

Appearing on ESPN’s NBA Today, Perkins was asked about the recent season-ending injury to Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and how it will affect the team.

To the absolute shock of many, Perkins said that he sees the injury as only a “minor setback” and that the Mavs are “going to be just fine.”

He believes that the team should be less concerned about the next few months and more concerned about the next two to three years.

“This is a minor setback for a major come up… The Mavs are going to be just fine, the pressure is on them in the next 2-3 years to actually go out there and win,” Perkins said.

Kyrie Irving has been the team’s No. 2 scorer all year and still ranks among the best shooters in the association. Factor in the long recovery time from an ACL injury and Anthony Davis’ age and it’s hard to see why Mavs fans shouldn’t panic.

NBA fans were in disbelief over that take and it’s not hard to see why.

“Kendrick Perkins is officially the dumbest person on ESPN, and that’s hard to accomplish. Why they keep this knownothing around is beyond me,” one user wrote on X.

“I wonder how Nico Harrison lives with himself every day knowing only 3 people in the world thinks he made the right move by trading Luka. One of those 3 people is Kendrick Perkins… That’s hella grim,” wrote another.

“This year is toast. Next year is also toast unless somehow Kyrie declines his option. What is the window? 1 year in 27-28? That year AD has a player option so there is a contract extension decision too.”

“Kyrie has a 43 million player option he’s definitely opting into so that he can rehab. He isn’t playing in 2025-26. He’ll be a free agent after that. A core of Davis and Klay isn’t going anywhere.”

Even if Perkins is right and that Mavericks somehow make the play-in round or even the NBA playoffs without Kyrie Irving, it will only show that Perkins got lucky with the take.

There’s no rhyme or reason to a take like that given everything else that seems to have fallen apart for the Mavs.
